These
motto stones are known as the Babson Boulders, named after millionaire
philanthropist Roger Babson, who commissioned out of work stonecutters
to carve words into the boulders around Dogtown Common, Massachusetts.
The
Babson Boulders date back to the 1930s, and many of the slogans have
that Depression Era air of inspired determination, like a stony band of
self-help gurus.
