Scientists say as much as 4bn tons of the potent greenhouse gas
could be released into the atmosphere if ice melts.
Half the West
Antarctic ice sheet and a quarter of the East Antarctic sheet lie on
pre-glacial sedimentary basins containing around 21,000bn tons of
carbon, said the scientists.
