When the Athenians smashed the Persian army at Marathon,
Pheidippides
ran from the field of battle to Athens to inform the people there of
the joyous news. According to the legend, he died immediately
afterward—but not before slapping a 26.2 sticker on the back of his
chariot. Modern marathon runners have kept this tradition to honor him.
