Malaysia Islamic body bans yoga for Muslims

Malaysia's top Islamic body has ruled against Muslims practicing yoga.
In its non-binding edict, Malaysia's National Fatwa Council says yoga has elements of Hindu religion that could corrupt Muslims.
Council chairman Abdul Shukor Husin says yoga involves not just physical exercise but also includes spiritual elements.
Though the council's decisions are not legally binding on Malaysia's Muslim population, many nevertheless abide by the rulings.

Just replace the words islam and muslins with christianity and christians in the blurb above and you got the the same thing being spouted by both groups.

CIA lied about missionary plane shot down over Peru

The CIA Inspector General John Helgerson just issued a damning report that says the CIA lied about and covered up its involvement in a drug interception program with the Peruvian Airport. In 2001 the Peruvian Air Force used information the CIA gave them to shoot down a small plane loaded with US missionaries, causing the death of Veronica Bowers and her infant daughter Charity.

Obama might get rid of daylight saving time

President-elect Obama wants to get rid of daylight saving time in the United States to conserve energy.

Turns out, according to two academics on the NYT Op-Ed page, there is little scientific proof that this reduces energy consumption. It also turns out that this practice could be wasteful, a bit annoying, and a lot of people, including Obama, want to get rid of it.

A study in Indiana, a state that recently started DST, showed an overall increase of 1 percent in residential electricity use with occasional increases of 2 to 4 percent in late spring and early fall. So much for conserving energy.

Ii is not needed and it throws everything out of whack for a couple of days. So I vote we get rid of it, as well.

Monk, comedian handed lengthy prison terms

Courts in military-ruled Burma handed long prison sentences Friday to a prominent Buddhist monk and a popular comedian who are active in the country's pro-democracy movement.

In an intensive crackdown on activists, at least 100 people have received prison sentences of two to 65 years in the past two weeks.
Many of them were held for more than a year before being tried.

Comedian and activist Maung Thura - who is better known by his stage name, Zarganar - was sentenced to 45 years imprisonment for violations of the Electronics Act, which regulates all forms of electronic communication.

Khin Htay Kywe said the comedian still faces other charges.

Another lawyer said Buddhist monk Ashin Gambira was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment on various charges, including insulting religion, having links with illegal organizations and violating the Immigration Act.
The lawyer spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of antagonizing the government.

The monk helped organize last year's mass pro-democracy demonstrations, which were violently suppressed by the army in September last year.
He was previously sentenced to 56 years imprisonment on other charges, bringing his total sentence to 68 years.

Iraqi troops donate money to US wildfire victims

The U.S. military says a group of Iraqi soldiers has donated $500 to help California wildfire victims.

Iraqi Col. Abbas Fadhil at the Besmaya range complex south of Baghdad says his troops want to send a message to the American people with the donation that "we are a family."

A handful of wildfires raged through Southern California earlier this month.
The blazes damaged or destroyed about 1,000 homes.

The military says it's the fourth donation sent by the Iraqis to Americans hit by tragedy. Thursday's statement says they also raised $1,500 for victims of hurricanes Gustav and Ike and donated $500 to the National Sept. 11 Memorial.
