Advertising for snitches

The Albuquerque Police Department has turned to the want ads for snitches.

An ad this week in the alternative newspaper The Alibi asks "people who hang out with crooks" to do part-time work for the police.

It reads in part: "Make some extra cash! Drug use and criminal record OK."

Capt. Joe Hudson says police received more than 30 responses in two days. He says one tip was a "big one" but wouldn't elaborate.

An informant whose tip helps officers arrest a drug dealer could earn $50. A tip about a murder suspect could bring up to $700.

It's not the first time department has run ads. In a program 10 years ago, police received so many calls they turned the phones off.

Man hopes jet pack takes him across Royal gorge

A daredevil hopes to propel himself across a southern Colorado canyon using a jet pack powered by hydrogen peroxide.

Eric Scott says that he's never traveled as far as he wants to on Monday: 1,500 feet.

The Royal Gorge is more than 1,100 feet deep. A bridge spanning it was the site of a deadly stunt in 2003 when a parachute jumper miscalculated and fell.

Scott works for Denver-based Jet P.I. The company developed a jet pack for stunts and promotions that is based on one developed in the 1960s for the military.

The original one could fly for only about 20 seconds. The new one can go for more than 30 seconds at faster than 70 mph.

Man sentenced for killing slow hairdresser

An Arkansas man has been sentenced to prison for fatally shooting a stylist who was taking too long to braid his hair.

Thirty-year-old Kerry Rendall Wilson of Little Rock was sentenced Friday to 24 years for second-degree murder. He will be eligible for parole in six years.

Wilson's lawyer says his client was high on marijuana dipped in formaldehyde when 39-year-old Henrietta Jones was killed in November 2007.

But the lawyer, Bill James, says one of the woman's sons actually killed her.

No charges planned in Maine 'shotgun pool' sign

Authorities in Maine say no charges are planned against the owner of a store where a sign invited customers to bet on a date when President-elect Barack Obama would be assassinated.

Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion said Friday that Oak Hill General Store owner Steve Collins denied any knowledge of the "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool" sign.

Dion added that the sign was gone when a deputy visited the store in Standish to investigate the report on November 7th.

Dion said posting the sign would not necessarily constitute a threat or a terrorizing incident.

*****

So just what does constitute a threat or a terrorizing incident, then?

Idiots with guns

Authorities in Michigan say a hunter's stray bullet has grazed two young boys at a day care near Cheboygan.

The Cheboygan County sheriff's department says a 43-year-old woman fired her rifle at a deer on Thursday but the bullet penetrated a wall and grazed the boys - ages 3 and 5 - inside Angie's Country Kids Day Care in Benton Township.
The boys were released from a hospital after treatment.

Authorities say the woman was hunting about 400 yards away, and may not have realized there was a day care in the area.

*****

This is why there should be more stringent controls on guns. Better training on how to handle them is a must. And part of that knowing how to handle the is knowing what is around you when you fire a weapon.

OK, now all you morons out there who do not have a clue as to what the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution of the United States even says, much less means feel free to spout off so we will know what an idiot you are.

Relevance and the GOP

Jay Bookman points out in the Atlanta-Constitution that "an irrelevant republican party does no one any good."

To which the folks over at TalkLeft point out is only a half truth ... saying the other half of the equation is "an irrelevant republican party does no one any harm. it's not as if a 'relevant' republican party did any good for the nation as a whole."

They go on to point out:

The Republican Party is viewed favorably by 34 percent of Americans, while the Democratic Party is viewed favorably by 55 percent. It seems that lying about war, mismanaging the economy, letting New Orleans drown, bullying voters with endless threats about terrorist villains, and covering up scandals involving corruption or bad behavior have set the public against the GOP. Should that surprise us?

If Republicans want to become relevant again, the formula is simple. Learn to govern. Learn to behave. Learn to tell the truth. After the GOP does those things, it can consider another attempt to be relevant to the nation's future.

*****

Won't happen! The GOP will never be relevant to this nation's future ... it never has been in the first place. It has ever been the 'party' out to destroy this nation from its inception until this past November 4, 2009 when the nation said NO to their wanton destruction of our nation. It was the closest they have come to succeeding in their desires but we stopped them!

Thief apologizes for robbery ...

Now this is something you don't hear about everyday but with economic times bad and getting worse, we just might ... a thief with a heart!

A thief who robbed a general store apologized to the owner and left the singles behind so workers on the next shift would have something in the till.

The knife-wielding man made off with an undetermined amount of money from Joe's Pond Country Store on Wednesday after threatening owner Jeff Downs.

"I'm very sorry I have do this," he told Downs.

When Downs asked him to leave behind the $1 bills for the morning shift, he agreed.

No arrests have been made, Vermont State Police Lt. Timothy Clouatre said Friday.

"Usually, they're in more of an angry mode, 'Just give me the money and get out,'" he said. "Maybe this is somebody who's just desperate, but isn't a career criminal."

Downs suggested that money is scarce in the wrong places. "Wall Street tycoons can't live on millions and here is this kid willing to be shot or go to jail for a couple of hundred bucks. Something is not right."

*****

You know the store owner just might be on to something, there.

'Granny Robber' suspect nabbed ... Maybe

Police in Ohio have arrested a 68-year-old woman on a bank robbery charge - and they want to know if she's the so-called "Granny Robber" they've been seeking since last May.

Police in the southwest Ohio town of Franklin say a woman handed a note to a teller in a Huntington Bank branch Friday and made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

Officers said Barbara Joly of Middletown was arrested a short time later and they say she fit the description of the woman who robbed the bank.

Investigators say Joly had sunglasses and a scarf with her.

They won't say if those items were worn by the robber in Friday's bank holdup, but that is how an older woman was dressed during four bank robberies in the area since May.

Hezbollah TV banned in Germany

The director of Hezbollah's satellite TV station says a German ban on the network violates international laws protecting media freedom.
Al-Manar TV Director Abdullah Kassir asserts the German government acted on a request from what he called "Zionist lobbies" in Europe in deciding to ban broadcasts of the Arabic language network.

Hezbollah has been fighting Israel since the early 1980s and is a powerful political force in Lebanon.
Germany banned Hezbollah's television station Friday on grounds that it violates the country's constitution.
The ban prevents German satellite television companies from offering the channel.
The station said Saturday it violated no laws and vowed the ban would not stop it from doing its job.

*****

This isn't a smart move on Germany's part. Denying the flow of ideas is never a good practice.
We do not get Hezbollah TV here either (not that I really care to either - my Arabic is not that great - so a lot of what they would say would go into the ether anyway.) but being able to hear what others are saying can help bridge gaps in understanding between one another.

There is always the risk of hearing something you don't particularly like or care for and up to something outright repugnant to you when you listen to another. But not listening has not gotten anyone anywhere at anytime ... wars are fought over just such as not listening.

I am sure that my readers in that part of the world (Arabia, et. al.) may raise an eyebrow about what is said here but at least they can raise that eyebrow because they are able to read this blog. The Germans who read this blog may raise one too but they will not be able to raise an eyebrow at anything said on Hezbollah TV because they aren't allowed to hear it.

Economy - For the People, By the People

President Barack Obama today offered an outline of his economic recovery plan and jobs were the top priority.

American workers will rebuild the nation's roads and bridges, modernize its schools and create more sources of alternative energy, creating 2.5 million jobs by 2011, Obama said.

"These aren't just steps to pull ourselves out of this immediate crisis," he said. "These are the long-term investments in our economic future that have been ignored for far too long."

Details of the plan are still being worked out by his economic team, Obama said, but he hopes to implement the plan shortly upon taking office January 20.

He referred to figures out this week showing that new home purchases in October were the lowest in 50 years, and that 540,000 new unemployment claims had been filed -- the highest in 18 years.

"We must do more to put people back to work and get our economy moving again," he said. More than a million jobs have been lost this year, he said, and "if we don't act swiftly and boldly, most experts now believe that we could lose millions of jobs next year."

The plan will be aimed at jump-starting job creation, Obama said, and laying the foundation for a stronger economy.

"We'll put people back to work rebuilding our crumbling roads and bridges, modernizing schools that are failing our children, and building wind farms and solar panels, fuel-efficient cars and the alternative energy technology that can free us from our dependence on foreign oil and keep our economy competitive in the years head," he said.

He noted he will need support from both Democrats and Republicans to pass such a plan, and said he welcomes suggestions from both sides of the aisle.

"But what is not negotiable is the need for immediate action," he said. "Right now, there are millions of mothers and fathers who are lying awake at night wondering if next week's paycheck will cover next month's bills.

"There are Americans showing up to work in the morning, only to have cleared out their desks by the afternoon. Retirees are watching their life savings disappear, and students are seeing their college dreams deferred. These Americans need help, and they need it now."

Throughout history, he said, Americans have been able to rise above their divisions to work together, he said.

"That is the chance our new beginning now offers us, and that is the challenge we must rise to in the days to come," Obama said. "It is time to act. As the next president of the United States, I will."

Mugabe ... a little paranoid?

A group including former UN chief Kofi Annan and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter postponed a visit to Zimbabwe meant to highlight the country's humanitarian crisis after the government refused to cooperate.

Annan said the delegation, which had been set to arrive in Zimbabwe this weekend, needed "no red carpet treatment," but only the government's "permission to help the poor and the desperate."

"However the refusal of the Zimbabwean government to facilitate our visit in any way has made it impossible for us to travel at this time," Annan said.

The trio -- which also included rights activist Graca Machel, wife of former South African president Nelson Mandela -- wanted to find ways to ease the plight of Zimbabweans, nearly half of whom are in need of emergency food aid. In addition, a cholera epidemic sweeping the country has claimed several lives and spread to neighboring South Africa.

But the state-owned daily newspaper, The Herald, on Thursday said the three -- who belong to a group of senior statesmen known as the Elders -- were trying to boost the opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), in power-sharing talks with President Robert Mugabe.

"The visit has been deemed a partisan mission by a group of people with partisan interests," The Herald quoted an unnamed government source.

"The Elders wrote to (Mugabe's) government on the intended visit, but they have been advised that while it appreciates the humanitarian concern by the group, it was important for them to plan their visit on a date that is convenient and agreed to by both sides."

When Annan announced the visit, he said it was purely humanitarian and would not touch on the negotiations that continue to drag on to form a unity government in Zimbabwe.

Mugabe signed a power-sharing deal with MDC's Morgan Tsvangirai in September but it is yet to take effect.

The MDC accuses Mugabe of grabbing all key ministries such as home affairs, information, local government, foreign affairs and defense. It said it wants an "equitable" distribution.

Annan, in announcing the postponement Saturday, said the group wanted to use their influence to get international aid to the millions of people in Zimbabwe in need of help.

Machel said she was "extremely disappointed."

"We want to talk to the people and hear their stories directly. We want people to know that we care, and that we will do all we can to help them. People are dying from hunger every day in Zimbabwe and hospitals are unable to treat the sick. With schools struggling to stay open, children are missing out on an education. One in four children has lost one or both parents. The government's attitude to our visit is deeply regrettable."

Carter noted that he supported Zimbabwe's liberation struggle -- led by Mugabe -- while he was the U.S. president.

"I am partisan. I make no apology for that. I supported Zimbabwe's liberation struggle and I oppose suffering and misery. But I am very sorry that we are unable to visit Zimbabwe. We will continue with our plans to learn as much as we can while we are here in the region, where millions of Zimbabweans inside and outside the country face a daily struggle for survival."

Annan and Carter said they would remain in South Africa to monitor the situation in Zimbabwe.

*****

It appears a little paranoia is creeping into Mugabe's government.

Sole Burmese protester demands activists' release

A lone demonstrator staged a silent protest in front of detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi's party headquarters Saturday demanding the military government free all student activists as the country celebrated its National Day.

The holiday commemorates a boycott by Yangon University students 88 years ago in defiance of British colonial rule, a protest that inspired Myanmar's independence movement.
Although the government does not hold any public events to mark the day, Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy regularly celebrates with a party.

Before the celebration, party member Min Thein walked into the middle of the street in front of the party headquarters and stood silently with a placard reading, "Release Min Ko Naing and other political prisoners."

Min Ko Naing is a member of the 88 Generation Students group, which participated in a brutally suppressed 1988 democratic uprising.
Along with many of his fellow former students he was sentenced to 65 years in prison this month for taking part in an Aug. 21, 2007, street protest against a massive fuel price hike by the government.

Plainclothes police took videos and photos of Min Thein's lone protest but did not arrest him during the minutes he stood silently.

"I am expressing my feelings and I am ready to face all consequences," Min Thein told reporters after the protest.

The party marked the anniversary by calling for the release of all political prisoners, including student activists and Buddhist monks who were arrested during anti-government demonstrations in September last year.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Suu Kyi has spent more than 13 of the past 19 years under house arrest.
