Missing hikers found busking after huge rescue operation

Two hikers whose apparent disappearance triggered a massive four-day search operation were found miles away obliviously busking on a street in Asheville, North Carolina. Tesla Rackley, 20, and Anthony Logan, 25, were reported missing during a Pisgah National Forest camping trip with family on Saturday. Authorities in Henderson County sent out a press release to media on Monday asking the public be on the lookout for the pair.

On Tuesday afternoon, Logan and Rackley were found busking in front of Mast General Store downtown with their dog, unaware of the search efforts underway to find them. "Two sheriffs approached us and asked us our names, and we were surprised and answered, 'Yeah'," Logan recalled. "And they explained to us they were from Transylvania [and] I want to say Brevard, and they were here to locate missing peoples." Henderson County law enforcement says tens of thousands of dollars were spent to locate the pair.
"The amount of effort and expense that's gone into this recovery effort is tremendous," Maj. Frank Stout of the Henderson County Sheriff's Office said of the search. "We've had helicopters in the air for a couple of days," Stout said. "We've had multiple resources from Henderson and Transylvania County, the Upstate of South Carolina. People have given up their time. They've sacrificed their work." The hikers said they got separated from family and couldn't backtrack and find them, so they ended up hitching a ride to Asheville.
They didn't call family, Logan said, because it slipped his mind. "I feel, like, obligated to feel sorry, and it's my fault that a whole bunch of people had to work for no reason," he said. Stout says even though the hikers ultimately didn't need the expansive search, he would respond the same way in the future. "When we've got lost hikers, we're going to respond with everything we've got in the toolbox, as you would fully expect," Stout said. "That's what the public expects, and that's the effort they will give each time we go out and look for hikers." Stout says the couple will not face any charges.

A man using a blowtorch to weed a flowerbed on Sunday morning accidentally set fire to the century-old home where he was living. Crews responded to the blaze in Everson, Washington at about 11am, said Randy VanderHeiden, assistant chief for Whatcom County Fire District 1. They later learned the fire started shortly after the occupant, Randy Velthuizen, had used a propane torch to burn away weeds near the two-story house.

Velthuizen, 53, said it was wet outside when he started burning weeds at about 10am. He’s lived at the house for about 20 years, and the home is about 120 years old, he said. He’s burned weeds the same way before. “It kills it better,” Velthuizen said of using a blowtorch to get rid of the weeds. “They don’t come back for a long time.” Velthuizen said he was working on the back patio when he smelled smoke about 30 to 45 minutes after finishing killing weeds in the flowerbed. He called 911.
Because of the old-fashioned construction methods used to build the house, the fire spread quickly, making it harder for crews to put out, said Whatcom County Fire Marshal Mitch Nolze. Half of the home, Velthuizen said, is “totally totaled,” with the other half is damaged from smoke. He salvaged a few items from the house, he said, before officials told him to leave the rest while they investigate the scene. Velthuizen did not have renter’s insurance.
“It’s just stuff from the house, it can be replaced, most of it,” Velthuizen said. “Some of it was sentimental, but whatever. It just made downsizing a hell of a lot easier.” Velthuizen said he was now temporarily living in a mobile home parked on driveway of the house until he found a new home Though common, using a blowtorch to get rid of weeds can be considered a crime if doing so puts property at risk of burning, Nolze said. First-degree reckless burning, under state law, is a felony. Nolze said he would not refer this case for charges, however, because it was an accident.

Man unhappy about woman squatting upstairs in his house who refuses to move out

Daniel Riegel returned home one day last month to find a woman he didn't know had moved in. He asked her to leave, but she refused. He called police and they say there's nothing they can do.
“It’s been hell. Meth heads, heroin addicts and drug dealers. I don't even know who these people are,” said Riegel of Flint, Michigan. Those are just some of the shady characters Riegel says are coming in and out of his house. He says that's how it’s been ever since he went out of town for a few days - and came back to find a woman staying upstairs, a woman he didn't even know.
Riegel says while he was gone, his friend, who is now in jail, was keeping an eye on the place and invited the woman to stay for one night because she had nowhere to go. That was a month ago. Riegel says when he called Flint police, they came out but told him they couldn't do anything. They said to start the formal eviction process, which involves going to civil court. In the meantime, Riegel is living downstairs while this woman he does not know is living upstairs.
In the last month, about $1,000 worth of his stuff has gone missing. “She stole my swords, my meat clever and my 360 game station,” Riegel said. Riegels's godfather, who owns the home, says they've given her a formal eviction notice - but she isn't taking it seriously. Flint Police said because someone allowed her to stay at the home in the first place, and because it's been longer that 72 hours, it becomes a civil matter - and they have to go to court.

Burglary suspect caught despite spraying legs with fire extinguishers in attempt to elude arrest

A suspect in the burglary of a Family Dollar store in Florida tried to elude capture by spraying his legs with fire extinguishers, but instead is in the Hernando County Jail. At about 10:33pm on Monday, someone walking in Spring Hill reported hearing breaking glass and then saw a man running from a Family Dollar store.

Deputies from Hernando County Sheriff's Office found the store's front glass window had been broken with a cinder block. They later noted the suspect, Anthony Dixon Jr., 18, appeared to turn off the power to the business before breaking the window and entering the business. Additional deputies and a K-9 unit were called in to search for Dixon.
Deputies then noticed an area behind a neighboring business that had a large amount of a white powdery substance from a fire extinguisher had been sprayed. Investigators then found two spent fire extinguishers. Deputies, with help from bystanders, found Dixon walking nearby. He had a white powdery substance on his legs and was taken into custody.
Dixon admitted to breaking into the Family Dollar store in an attempt to steal cigarettes and added that he stole the fire extinguishers and sprayed himself in an attempt to elude capture. Dixon was transported to the Hernando County Detention Center on charges of burglary and criminal mischief. He was also charged with two counts of grand theft in connection with the stolen fire extinguishers. His bond was set at $11,000.

Man arrested after argument with his wife about non-existent child

A man from Hephzibah, Georgia, was arrested after police say he got into an altercation with his wife over the custody of their child.

The couple do not have a child together. Shortly before midnight on March 29, deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office were called out to a home in Hephzibah for a domestic dispute.
A witness told deputies Ray Maurice Roye had accused his wife of hiding the couple’s child and trying to hand him over to DFCS. Roye’s wife told deputies that they did not have a child and that Roye had been using methamphetamines.
Roye reportedly slapped the witness’s face, but deputies weren’t able to determine if the slap actually occurred. Roye was arrested and turned over to the Richmond County Detention Center without incident. Warrants were taken out on Roye for Simple Battery Family Violence.

Woman found with crack pipe in her vagina said she was just storing it for a friend

A woman arrested for cocaine possession told jailers in Florida that the crack pipe found hidden in her vagina was not her property, but rather she was storing the drug paraphernalia for a friend. Tiffany Flores, 23, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon following a traffic stop in Fellsmere, a city just north of Vero Beach, where Flores resides.

Flores, a passenger in the vehicle stopped, confessed to ownership of a small bag of cocaine that a police officer found on the roadway “directly beside the passenger door frame,” according to an arrest affidavit. After initially denying that she had thrown the cocaine out of the car window, Flores reportedly admitted to owning it, which she said she purchased from a man named “Nino.” Upon arriving at the county jail, Flores claimed that she could not go through a scanner since she was pregnant.
But after a pregnancy test showed negative results, “jail staff processed Flores through the body scanner.” That is when officers noticed a “foreign object located inside of Flores’s vaginal area.” Flores subsequently retrieved “a clear cylindrical tube containing a burnt end” and gave it to an officer. But the crack pipe was not hers, explained Flores, who said that the item was owned by a female friend who was driving the car that had been pulled over.
Flores claimed that her pal “threw the crack pipe on her lap” and asked her to hide the item when a patrolman began following them. “Flores then hid it inside of her vagina in an attempt to avoid a search,” according to the affidavit. Despite that explanation, Flores was charged with introducing contraband into a correctional facility, along with drug possession and tampering with evidence counts. Locked up in lieu of $11,000 bond, Flores has previously been arrested for theft, cocaine possession, credit card fraud, and resisting arrest.

Police issue warning about foot and hand fetish scam

Police in New Zealand have issued a warning about an international hand and foot fetish scam which has caused distress among its victims, many of whom are young, cash-strapped and female. According to Netsafe New Zealand, an independent internet watchdog, there have been nearly 20 reports of women being promised money to take pictures and videos of their hands and feet – and the numbers are growing every day. So far all of the victims were told the images were for ‘an art project’ – but Netsafe said it was highly likely they were instead being posted on overseas sexual fetish websites. People who fell for the scheme were promised between NZ$2,000 (£970, US$1,360) and NZ$9,000 (£4,350, US$3,110) , money they never saw. Victims said the initial requests for photos were straightforward enough – simple snaps of their hands and feet. But then the requests became more specific. “It started getting a bit weird and I started getting suspicious,” an unidentified university student said. “She was like, ‘This one we need you to get supplies’ ... she asked me to get oil, gloves and stockings.” A number of victims were targeted through a national student job website.
“We have known about this scam for a while, but now someone has spoken out many more victims are coming forward, and the reports are coming to us at an unusual rate,” said Sean Lyons from Netsafe. “People can develop fetishes for any body part, ears, elbows, whatever. We haven’t had any reports yet but I wouldn’t be surprised if there is someone out there offering money for people to take photos of their ears, and saying it’s for ‘art’.” Lyons said so far only one of the victims had identified her feet on an overseas fetish website. “As you can imagine, to find that image requires trawling through these fetish websites, which can be very disturbing. And it also means realizing you have been scammed, and why.”
Lyons said statistically New Zealanders were no more vulnerable to internet scams than any other nation, but their “trusting nature” sometimes meant they took promises at face value, and could be easy targets. Detective Superintendent Tim Anderson, New Zealand police’s national crime manager, said: “This particular scam differs from ordinary phishing scams that target individuals or businesses using information specific to the target victim to get money. This involves a legitimate site asking for photos without being clear about the intention or use of those photos. Don’t send personal information, personal details and or photographs to people you do not know without considering the risk that the images or information could be used for other purposes and could be posted online for others to see and share. And finally remember if you think it is too good to be true it probably is.”
