“Tjelvar’s grave”, Boge, Gotland, Sweden, 1938
Tjelvar’s Grave is one of the best preserved stone ship settings in Gotland. According the legend Tjelvar, the first man lived in Gotland, is buried there. Archaeologists have dated the grave to made in the late Bronze Ages, 1100-500 BC.
Tjelvar’s grave is 18 metres long and 5 metres wide. The height of the gunwale stones diminishes towards the centre of the ship, which has also been filled with stones to form a boat-deck. A plundered stone-slab coffin, containing cremated bones and a few potsherds, was uncovered in an excavation in the 1930s.

I’ve
been watching with some dismay the wrestling match going on between the
governor and the Maine Legislature over the opportunity offered by the
federal Affordable Care Act to expand our MaineCare program.
Snack lovers went into a slight panic when Hostess went out of business last year, because that meant no more Twinkies. To me, it meant no more Merita bread, and I still haven't adjusted. But fear no more, Twinkies will return July 15th!Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo bought Twinkies and other Hostess cakes for $410 million. When Twinkies return, they will cost $3.99 for a box of ten. Other Hostess products, such as Wonder Bread, were bought by different companies. More
Apollo Global Management, founded by Leon Black, is known for buying troubled brands then selling them for a profit; its investments include fast-food chains Carl's Jr. and Hardee's. Metropoulos & Co., which has revamped then sold off brands including Chef Boyardee and Bumble Bee, also owns Pabst Brewing Co.

The trimmed-down Hostess Brands LLC has a far less costly operating structure than the predecessor company. Some of the previous workers were hired back, but they're no longer unionized.
The
star who went viral after the Bonnaroo Music Festival wasn't any of the
headliners -it was the woman who danced along with them. Holly Maniatty
is a sign language interpreter, a professional who works all kinds of
concerts. Rap shows are a special challenge as the words fly fast and
are often freestyle, wandering far from the recorded version. Maniatty
holds her own interpreting on the fly, but she also does plenty of
research beforehand. She talked about her first rap show, for the
Beastie Boys in 2009.To prepare for the show, Maniatty says she logged more than 100 hours of research on the Beastie Boys, memorizing their lyrics and watching past shows. Her prep work also includes researching dialectal signs to ensure accuracy and authenticity. An Atlanta rapper will use different slang than a Queens one, and ASL speakers from different regions also use different signs, so knowing how a word like guns and brother are signed in a given region is crucial for authenticity.Read more about Maniatty's work at Slate.
Signing a rap show requires more than just literal translation. Maniatty has to describe events, interpret context, and tell a story. Often, she is speaking two languages simultaneously, one with her hands and one with her mouth, as she’ll sometimes rap along with the artists as well. When a rapper recently described a run-in with Tupac, Maniatty rapped along while making the sign for hologram, so deaf fans would know the reference was to Tupac’s holographic cameo at Coachella, not some figment of the rapper's imagination.

Okay, we knew on one level that fruits and vegetables are still "alive," because we can grow a new plant from just a piece of celery,
carrot, or potato from the produce market. But a new study throws a
different light on the concept of "life," as far as plants are
concerned.A study published online today in the journal Current Biology found that store-bought cabbage, lettuce, spinach, zucchini, sweet potatoes, carrots, and blueberries respond to light-dark cycles up to about a week after harvest.Thinking about this led me to wonder if scientists can take individual cells from fruit and determine whether they are still alive. And when do they really die? Two weeks in the refrigerator? When we cut them? Or when we cook or eat them? Thinking along these lines can lead to nightmares. Read more about the study at NatGeo News.
And when the produce was kept on the same light-dark cycle as a predator—cabbage looper moth caterpillars (Trichoplusia ni)—it was better able to resist attacks.
Circadian clocks tell plants when the seasons change due to variations in day length, said Janet Braam, a plant biologist at Rice University in Houston, Texas. But the clock is also critical in plant defenses against insects.
"[Plants] know when the insects eat," said Braam, who is a co-author on the recent study, "so they can prepare a defense in advance."

These print-resolution stills were created for the cover of the February 8, 2013 issue of Science. They show the free-air gravity map developed by the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission.
If the Moon were a perfectly smooth sphere of uniform density, the gravity map would be a single, featureless color, indicating that the force of gravity at a given elevation was the same everywhere. But like other rocky bodies in the solar system, including Earth, the Moon has both a bumpy surface and a lumpy interior. Spacecraft in orbit around the Moon experience slight variations in gravity caused by both of these irregularities.
The free-air gravity map shows deviations from the mean, the gravity that a cueball Moon would have. The deviations are measured in milliGals, a unit of acceleration. On the map, dark purple is at the low end of the range, at around -400 mGals, and red is at the high end near +400 mGals. Yellow denotes the mean.
These views show a part of the Moon's surface that's never visible from Earth.

People
in the Middle Ages did keep pets – dogs, cats, birds, monkeys and many
other kinds of animals. Although they often had particular duties – i.e.
hunting or catching rats – there are many accounts that showed
affection and love between these pets and their owners.
The
14th century French knight Jehan de Seure had a hound named Parceval,
while his wife had Dyamant. Leon Battista Alberti, the Renaissance
philosopher, said his dog was sired by Megastomo (Big Mouth). Ludovico
III Gonzaga, ruler of the city of Mantua from 1444 to 1478, has at least
two dogs – Rubino and Bellina. When Rubino died, Ludovico ordered that
he buried in a casket and that he would make sure that the animal would
also get a tombstone. Isabella d’Este, a famous Italian lady and also a
ruler of Mantua, was known to have many little dogs, two of which were
named Aura and Mamia.

In Chicago, Donna Santucci opened Fido To Go to compliment her existing pet-grooming business in 2011. "I have over 40 applicants" who want to license the brand, she said.
Right now, Santucci makes all the cookies and frozen yogurt cups she sells from scratch in a commercial kitchen in downtown Chicago. "I’m looking for a bigger facility now as we speak." [...]
With all of this blurring of the lines between human and dog food, mix-ups sometimes do occur. Santucci said sometimes people tried to buy the frozen yogurt for themselves, and she had to explain that their human palate might not appreciate the unsweetened taste.
