Astronomical News

NASA's Kepler space telescope has detected something weird orbiting a nearby star -- is it evidence of an alien civilization? Or is it just a clump of comets?
It's a virtual certainty that comets have delivered the building blocks of life to Europa's hidden ocean, according to a new study.
After creating 2 maps of Jupiter's dynamic atmosphere, astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope saw some interesting detail they they can't immediately explain.
A babbling river on Mars may have pushed pebbles along for some 30 miles -- according to new analysis of images taken by the Curiosity rover.
If you could hear the stuff that swirls around black holes, it would probably sound like the empty spaces on the radio dial.

Beautiful footage of Jupiter

Jupiter is more beautiful than ever in this footage from NASA, as used by Adrienne Lafrance to illustrate her splendid article about the gas giant.
rom far away, the planet looks vaguely beige. But its clouds are a kaleidoscope of warm colors—alternately red, orange, pink, and tan, with some blue. That may be the effect of sunlight breaking down chemicals like ammonia, but scientists aren’t sure. “We still don't know what makes the clouds the colors they are,” Simon said. “Another thing we don’t know is: Why the storms last so long.”
In the future, the people who live around Jupiter are going to be really smug, aren't they?
Its reputation was once not so grand, Lafrance adds in a follow-up that astronomers used to find the painterly, swirling surface quite unpleasant.
It was generally hoped that, in course of time, this much respected orb would see the error of his ways, and cease to assume the appearance of an inebriated planet.
Sad to relate, however, he has gone from bad to worse, and is just now showing, side by side with the red spot complained of, a number of white ones, which give his countenance an appearance truly sad to behold. No wonder that quiet, staid astronomers, who, from joking, stand aghast at such an exhibition.

Cannabis-munching feral pig led to police arresting man for drug production

A feral pig munching on a cannabis plant has led to police in Australia arresting a man allegedly growing the drug.
Police said they were called to a property at Meringandan West, north Toowoomba, Queensland, last Wednesday to investigate a disturbance.
There, they said they discovered the feral pig chewing leafy green material, which turned out to be cannabis. Due to the size of the pig, officers did not try to seize the plants.
A 1.6-metre-tall plant and 140 grams of the drug were eventually recovered, police said. A 44-year-old man will appear in the Oakey Magistrates Court on October 21 charged with drug production and possession.

Taxi driver surprised to find four foot snake in her cab

A taxi driver got the fright of her life after a customer left a snake nestling in the back of her cab. Madge Allen, 67, said the find is the strangest and most frightening she’s ever experienced in her 28-year taxi driving career. The 4ft corn snake is believed to have slithered out of a passenger’s handbag before wrapping itself around the bottom of the drivers’ seat. Madge unwittingly returned to the Stanways Private Hire taxi office in Mold, Flintshire, Wales, after dropping her fare off at Flint Railway Station with the snake in her possession.
But she was made aware of the stowaway on her return and said she flew straight out of her car, after revealing snakes rank among her worst fears. “I am petrified of snakes,” Madge said. “It is definitely the strangest thing I have found in the back of my taxi. If it had come by my feet when I was driving I don’t know what would have happened.” The taxi driver said she had picked up two young men and a young woman from the Mold taxi office to take them to Flint at about 10.30am on Monday.
Upon her return she discovered her passengers had since been in touch to explain they had left a snake in the back of the car after it had escaped from the woman’s handbag. “If I’d known they’d had a snake with them I wouldn’t have let them in the car,” said Madge. “But when I got back to the office and they told me they thought there was one in the back I flew straight out of the cab. I was so shocked. People have left plenty of mobile phones and wallets, but never livestock. I thought I’d seen it all.” A snake handler known to staff at the taxi office was then called to rescue the sleeping male reptile after it had curled itself around bars underneath the drivers’ seat.
Sharon Lewis, manager at Stanways Taxis, said: “A woman rang to say she’d left a snake in one of our cars. I thought it was a joke. She told me it was white and orange and that it wouldn’t bite. She said it had been in her handbag so I was expecting a little thing, but when Madge got back we took a torch to have a look and we could see it was about 4ft long. Madge was frightened to death. The woman said her friends would come and collect it, but nobody has been so the snake handler is looking after it. I think it is stupid to carry a snake like that in your handbag.”

Playboy Magazine to Drop Nudity

It was a joke for decades when someone said they “only read Playboy for the articles.” Nobody believed it, even though the articles were often amazing: in-depth, relevant stories from top journalists and authors. But face it, Playboy was built on nude pictures of women. From Hugh Hefner’s first issue in 1953, featuring Marilyn Monroe, the magazine set the standard for sexy entertainment and often served as sex education for adolescent boys. Things are different now. If Hef wasn’t still kicking around at age 89, he’d be spinning in his grave. As it is, Hefner himself saw the writing on the wall, and Playboy will stop publishing pictures of nude women. The stated reason is because pornography is readily available for free on the web. That’s true, but are there any positive reasons for Playboy to change so radically?
The magazine had already made some content safe for work, Mr. Flanders said, in order to be allowed on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, vital sources of web traffic.
In August of last year, its website dispensed with nudity. As a result, Playboy executives said, the average age of its reader dropped from 47 to just over 30, and its web traffic jumped to about 16 million from about four million unique users per month.
The magazine will adopt a cleaner, more modern style, said Mr. Jones, who as chief content officer also oversees its website. There will still be a Playmate of the Month, but the pictures will be “PG-13” and less produced — more like the racier sections of Instagram. “A little more accessible, a little more intimate,” he said. It is not yet decided whether there will still be a centerfold.
That’s it. Safer web browsing leads to more views. Changing the magazine to something that would be okay to leave out in a dentist’s office might lead to more magazine sales. Read more about Playboy’s big change at the New York Times

How Green Bay, Wisconsin Became the Toilet Paper Capital of the World

Several companies based in Green Bay produce toilet paper, including Northern Paper Mills, the company that started producing Northern Tissue in 1901. But the reason it was such a revolutionary product that carried the city through the Great Depression encompasses the entire history of toilet paper. It’s not a particularly pleasant history before the 20th century.
The first mention of toilet paper in Western literature is not favorable. It comes in Francois Rabelais’ supremely scatological Gargantua(1534) in which the titular giant discusses how through “long and curious experience” he has “found out a means to wipe my bum.” Having tried sheets, curtains, table-cloths, hay, straw, wool and cats to do the deed, Gargantua announces that by far his worst choice was paper:
“Who his foul tail with paper wipes
Shall at his ballocks leave some chips.”
The rest of the story is just about as horrifying. Read it at Atlas Obscura and thank your lucky stars you live in modern times.

Real-Life Murders That Inspired Spooky Ghost Stories

They say that truth is stranger than fiction, so is it any wonder that our scariest ghost stories were inspired by real events? Well, the ghosts may be fictional, but the circumstances of their deaths are more terrifying than the supernatural aftermath. One concerns a historic house in Albany, New York, called Cherry Hill.
The trouble began when a worker at Cherry Hill named Joseph Orton (his real name, it later came out, was Jesse Strang; he’d changed it after faking his own death in 1825 as part of a scheme to desert his wife and four children) fell for one of the “upstairs” ladies who lived in the well-populated house. Elsie Whipple was related by marriage to the man who’d originally built Cherry Hill; she herself had gotten married at the tender age of 14, and her husband John had turned her inheritance into a growing fortune.
But that didn’t stop Elsie from reciprocating Jesse’s forbidden feelings, and the two began exchanging steamy love letters. The only way they could be together, they decided, was to do away with John Whipple. That would free Elsie from her marriage—and free her money, too. They concocted a scheme that included false sightings of strange men lurking around the property, culminating in John’s death on May 7 (Jesse shot him through one of Cherry Hill’s windows; the bullet hole is still there).
Jesse Strang was executed for the murder, and the ghost of John Whipple still haunts Cherry Hill. That’s just part of one of five real murders that became legendary ghost stories at io9.

Mayor of Stockton, CA detained by DHS at SFO, forced to give up laptop password

Mayor Anthony R. Silva was on his way back from a mayor's conference in China when the DHS border guards confiscated his laptop and phones and detained him, telling him he would not be allowed to leave until he gave them his passwords. He has still not had his devices returned. The mayor says that DHS officers told him that border confiscations of devices were common.
The DHS will not acknowledge whether an investigation is underway, and will not confirm that they have the mayor's property.
The DHS first disclosed its policy on laptop searches at the border in 2008, which amounted to "we can take your laptop, or anything else, for no reason at all, forever, and disclose anything we find to anyone we feel like feel like."
This sparked fierce debate, calls for Congressional hearings and a lawsuit (as well as some self-help measures) at the time, but the DHS has not budged on its policy.
In 2013, the 9th Circuit ruled that suspicionless laptop searches at the border were illegal, but a New York federal judge ruled for the DHS later that year.
Border laptop searches are used by law enforcement to avoid the need to get warrants for other investigations; law enforcement agencies coordinate with border agents to identify people whose data they'd like to steal, but against whom there is not enough evidence for a warrant. When those targets cross the border, the DHS steals their devices, ghosts their drives, and turns the data over to local law-enforcement. Journalists are especially targeted using this method.
“We can't control what the mayor or his representatives say ... but that won't dictate what we do or don't release to the media,” Schwab said. “Our priority is assuring the integrity of the investigative process and generally speaking we don't acknowledge that an investigation is underway ... unless or until charges are filed, arrests are made, or documents are publicly filed with the court that confirm a probe is taking place.”
For his part, Silva said he’s “happy to cooperate and comply with these inspection procedures if they are in fact routine and legal.”
Silva, however, raised several concerns with the incident.
“I think the American people should be extremely concerned about their personal rights and privacy,” he said. “As I was being searched at the airport, there was a Latino couple to my left, and an Asian couple to my right also being aggressively searched. I briefly had to remind myself that this was not North Korea or Nazi Germany. This is the land of the Free.”
Silva went on to say that he is “confident that any forensic search of my personal devices will never ever show illegal or inappropriate activities of any sort.”

Carnage as train smashed through store window

The All Smiles Aboard Trackless Train made an unscheduled stop inside the Eastwood Mall in Niles, Ohio, on Thursday afternoon after smashing through a window at the Game Stop store
The accident occurred as the miniature train lurched forward while a mechanic was making repairs to the out-of-service vehicle, according to Cafaro Company spokesman Joe Bell.
No one was on board the train at the time, including the mechanic, and no one inside the Game Stop store was hurt. The engine went about two feet inside the store, damaging the window on the store front. The store was forced to close while it was repaired.

Bell said the mechanic has been told that he is no longer allowed to do repairs on the train inside the Eastwood Mall. The mechanic was very apologetic about the accident, he said. The trackless train offers rides for children and their parents around the mall during business hours. Bell said the train has been operating for four years in the mall without an accident.

Burglars wrote sarcastic reply to nursery children who left note asking them to stop stealing things

Fed up with yobs breaking into their school shed every weekend and damaging toys, youngsters at a nursery in Bolton, Greater Manchester, left a note pleading with them to stop. But rather than pricking the conscience of the vandals they instead scrawled a reply telling teachers not to lock the shed then they would not have to break in. The damage has so far cost the Alexandra Nursery School and Day Care Centre about £600. Headteacher Barbara Kenny said: "The staff put up a poster with the message 'please don't break our shed' and 'I cry when our toys are broken'. On Monday we have had a note chalked next to it saying 'keep it open then we won't break it'.
"It's really cheeky, but I suppose we have a dialogue with the thieves now." The children's full note read: "Please don't break our shed. I like nursery don't break it. You should take care of our things. I cry when our toys are broken. Play nice in our garden." The yobs replied: "Keep it open then we won't break it. Promise. P.S. Sorry." The Daubhill nursery's garden is hidden from view and the vandals sometimes take small chairs from the shed to sit on. When the weather was bad, they threw the contents of the shed outside, including children's toys, so they could shelter inside. Mrs Kenny said the school's garage door had also recently been damaged and branches ripped off a climbing tree.
She said scorch marks were also discovered on the wooden outdoor play equipment suggesting the vandals were trying to start a fire. She added: "We haven't found any alcohol bottles or needles but we think that's what they are doing. It's been going on for months. It eased off over the summer but we had builders in and all the scaffolding and fencing seemed to put the vandals off a bit. We must be going on for £500 or £600 worth of repairs and it's money out of our budget that should we should be spending on the children. I'm worried about the fact it is escalating and that they could set fire to the shed. It's just mindless damage and we're just getting fed up. We just want to highlight to the community that this happened and hopefully shame the vandals into stopping."
The nursery has no money to install CCTV cameras and police have told them they do not have the resources to patrol the area round the clock. The vandals are thought to be local teenagers. Inspector Dave Henthorne, of Bolton South and Central Integrated Neighboring Policing Team, said: "Those responsible need to examine their consciences and understand the impact it’s having on the children who attend the school. From a policing point of view, if we identify those responsible we will be arresting them on suspicion of criminal damage and it will seriously impact their own future. We have recorded two offenses of criminal damage and we have received 11 calls in total about anti-social behavior from local members of the public but because most of them report anonymously we can’t go and follow up the reports in the cold light of day."

Man arrested after getting finger stuck in his car's gas tank

Firefighters from Upper Darby Township were called out on Thursday afternoon after a Philadelphia man got his finger stuck in the petrol tank of his car.
Emergency Responders were called to the Upper Darby Wash and Lube Station at around 5:15pm following the report of a man with his finger stuck in the gas tank of a car. According to firefighters at the scene, Christopher Bolger, 25, said he thought someone had put chocolate in his gas tank, and he was trying to clean it out, when he got stuck.
Emergency responders first tried to slip the stuck digit from the tank, using lubricants but when that was unsuccessful they had to disassemble the piping that leads to the gas tank. About an hour after they arrived, they cut Bolger free from the car, but the pipe was still stuck on his finger. He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital for treatment and to have the pipe removed.

While there, however, authorities discovered that Bolger was wanted for failure to appear on a bench warrant for a protection from abuse order, Upper Darby police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said, and he was taken into custody after he was released from the hospital. "It's dumb all the way around on his part," Chitwood said. "Stupid is as stupid does."
