Police called to report of domestic dispute found man arguing with his pet parrot
A man from Ontario, Canada, was visited by police earlier this week while he was spending a night at home with his pet parrot.
Police in Brighton, between Toronto and Kingston, said they were
originally called to a home at 8pm on Tuesday after neighbors heard
what they believed to be a domestic dispute.
Northumberland OPP Const. Steve Bates said the neighbors knew the home
was usually occupied by a couple.
But police found only one person when they arrived. "They heard him yelling and saying, 'I hope you die," and so on and so forth," Bates said. "So we attended and we located the male of the household alone in the house screaming at his pet parrot who apparently was 'beaking off' at him, in his words."
The man had been drinking, Bates said, adding that the parrot did not appear to be hurt in any way. Police did not lay any charges. Bates described the call as a "very interesting" one for attending officers, adding such incidents sometimes create a welcome diversion. "These are the kinds of stories that police run into all the time," he said. "It just adds some levity to the job."

This trans woman just posted a very important selfie to make a point about bathroom laws
by Christina Pellegrini
Sarah McBride peed the other day. But it wasn’t just any trip to the bathroom. Sarah is a transgender woman, and she chose to use a women’s restroom in North Carolina. In a government building, no less.
Sarah’s powerful act comes after North Carolina put HB2
into effect, a law that requires bathroom goers to use the restroom of
their gender at birth, consequently discriminating against many in the
LGBT community.
The
25 year-old trans woman and activist is the communications manager for
LGBT Progress at American Progress, and she was recently in North
Carolina to speak to trans people about how the law was affecting their
lives.
Then, after a meeting at the Mecklenburg Government Center on Thursday, she went to the ladies’ room.
“Here I am using a women’s restroom in North Carolina that I’m technically barred from being in. They say I’m a pervert. They say I’m a man dressed as a woman. They say I’m a threat to their children. They say I’m confused. They say I’m dangerous,” Sarah writes in the Instagram caption. “I’m just a person. We are all just people. Trying to pee in peace.“
The response on Facebook was overwhelming, garnering 38,000 reactions and 13,804 shares at the time of publication.
“I’m
sorry for my state, Sarah. I’m hoping VERY much they see the error of
their ways and repeal this piece of garbage soon. Thank you for
‘breaking the rules’ to illustrate how stupid this whole thing is,”
wrote one person. “Proud to pee next to you anytime! #repealHB2,” wrote another.
“This isn’t about abstract issues or fears,” Sarah told BuzzFeed. “This is about real people being able to access the bathroom and being able to participate in public life.”
“I’m
a person just trying to make it through my day,” she added in her
statement. “Regardless of how I look I shouldn’t be afraid of
discrimination or violence.”
A Member of the Little Rock Nine Discusses Her Struggle to Attend Central High
Although about 80 African-American students had been approved by the Little Rock School Board to transfer to Central the following year, the number dwindled to 10 after the students were told they couldn't participate in extracurricular activities, their parents were in danger of losing their jobs, and there was a looming threat of violence. The parents of a tenth student, Jane Hill, decided not to allow their daughter to return after the mob scene on the first day.It took the 101st Airborne to get the students into the high school, but staying there was just as difficult. Read Trickey’s story at Smithsonian.
According to Trickey, her real motivation for attending Central was that it was nine blocks from her house and she and her two best friends, Melba Pattillo and Thelma Mothershed would be able to walk there.
“The nine of us were not especially political,” she says. “We thought, we can walk to Central, it’s a huge, beautiful school, this is gonna be great,” she remembers.
“I really thought that if we went to school together, the white kids are going to be like me, curious and thoughtful, and we can just cut all this segregation stuff out,” she recalls. Unfortunately, she was wrong.

The Pyramids of King Sneferu
When King Sneferu came to the throne of Egypt, the cool thing that all the pharaohs had was a Step Pyramid, like the original one built by King Djoser and designed by Imhotep (not the mummy). King Sneferu could easily have had one one because his predecessor King Huni had died before his could be finished. All Sneferu had to do was step in and put the last few blocks on.And that was only his first attempt. There would be others, with their own problems. Bitey Mad Lady tells the story of Sneferu’s pyramids in a truly amusing way.
But King Sneferu had a vision. He didn’t want any old Step Pyramid. He was going to build Egypt’s first smooth-sided pyramid, and make King Huni’s pyramid way taller in the bargain. It didn’t work. The core of Huni’s pyramid couldn’t handle the modifications and nowadays the Step Pyramid at Meidum looks like this:
It’s not on a hill - that’s the outer layers of the pyramid that have fallen down all around it. The name of the structure in Arabic is Heram el-Kaddaab, which means something like The Sort-Of Pyramid.

Why 19th Century Scientists Didn't Think the Platypus Was Real

The platypus was just made-up, like unicorns and dragons, right? Natalie Zarrelli writes at Atlas Obscura:
In his laboratory study in 1799, biologist George Shaw stared down at his new specimen in disbelief. The creature from the colony of New South Wales came preserved in pungent alcohol, and he carefully snipped the thick, brown pelt around the creature’s beak, sure he would soon reveal the stitches where an expert taxidermist had fused the bird and beast together. It was like nothing he had seen before: the creature had the body of a furry brown cat, four short legs and sharp claws over webbed feet; the tail of a beaver, but the beak of a duck.
Shaw had met his first platypus, and did not for a moment believe it was possibly real. Despite the preserved specimens returning from Australia, many scientists continued to believe that the platypus was a hoax. Some suspected that it was an accident of nature brought about by breeding between species. It would be a century before they definitely confirmed that the platypus was indeed real and, in fact, a mammal:
In the late 1800s, Scottish zoologist William Hay Caldwell finally managed to dissect fresh platypus eggs and confirmed once and for all that the animal did in fact lay them, though the embryos partially developed inside the platypus’s body, which also nursed its young. The platypus was classified as a mammal—one of five that are known to lay eggs, in the order Monotremata.

Charter school punishes concussion victim for shoving bully who was punching his head
"School policies are school policies."
Man alleges he was fired from store after complaining about penis-shaped party gift
Trader Joe's is being sued by a former employee, who says he was fired
for complaining about being given a gift resembling male genitalia
during a 2014 Christmas party at one of the grocery chain's Pasadena
stores.
Paul D. Roberts' Los Angeles Superior Court complaint alleges wrongful
termination, sexual harassment, failure to prevent sexual harassment,
retaliation and negligence. He is seeking unspecified compensatory and
punitive damages.
According to the complaint filed on Tuesday, Roberts was hired as a crew
member at the Trader Joe's store on Lake Avenue in February 2007. In
December 2014, a company Christmas party gift exchange was held and crew
member attendance "was expected and implicitly required," the suit
states.
The party occurred on a day Roberts was not scheduled to work, but he
says he felt compelled to attend to maintain a good relationship with
co- workers and supervisors.
After Roberts arrived at the party, co-workers seemed "excited" about
his arrival and anxious for him to open his gift, which was given to him
by co- worker Armina Asefvasziri, according to his court papers.
"Plaintiff opened the wrapped package and was shocked, embarrassed and humiliated to discover that the gift was a small penis with testicles which,
when submerged in water, would increase in size," the complaint says.
"Mr. Roberts was incredibly distraught in receiving such an obnoxious
and offensive item, particularly in front of his supervisor and having
received it from a female."
Roberts says he left the party feeling "humiliated and embarrassed." He filed an internal complaint and told supervisors that if he had given a similar gift to a female co-worker, he likely would have been reprimanded or fired, according to his court papers. Roberts felt one of the bosses was nonchalant and did not take him seriously, and claims the same supervisor later interrogated him about false accusations Asefvasziri allegedly made about the plaintiff. Meanwhile, Asefvasziri approached him four days after the party and teased him about his reaction to the gift, according to the suit. A human resources staff member told Roberts in January 2015 that his complaint was being investigated, but he was fired two days later, according to his court papers.
His attorney, William Stoner, said: “The reason given was a pretext for the retaliation. They indicated that his work was unsatisfactory and unacceptable. This is a unique case where you have a man that was being sexually harassed by a woman and then being fired after he complained about it.” said Stoner. In a more typical case, the roles would be reversed. It is no less harmful for the employee to be harassed when it is a man that is being harassed by a woman than in a situation that seems more common. We believe that men as well as women can be victims of sexual harassment in the workplace and this case is an example of that type of situation,” Stoner said. “We are seeking compensation for the loss of what had been his career for eight years,” Stoner said.

Steak thief led police on high-speed chase

Police officers in Texas apprehended a suspect, who is accused of
stealing steaks from a store, following a high-speed car chase.
The pursuit began after the suspect allegedly stole steaks from Walmart
in Longview shortly after 11am on Wednesday.
When police attempted a traffic stop, the suspect fled through two East
Texas counties, topping 100 mph, and was finally apprehended by Upshur
County deputies.
"It appears that there’s steaks and meats of some sort flying out the windows, and one of them bounced off my patrol car. That’s not something you think of people stealing, especially running from the police in the process. Today was a new one," said East Mountain patrol sergeant Marc Nichols.
Woman arrested after Stormtrooper attack on boyfriend
A Florida woman was arrested after police allegedly witnessed her striking her boyfriend with a Stormtrooper figure.
Leny Alagao, 26, was arrested on April 10 after Port St. Lucie police
reported seeing her use the plastic figure to hit her live-in boyfriend.
Police were dispatched at about 7:45pm to a “reported disturbance.”
Investigators went to the back of the home and saw Alagao strike her boyfriend with an approximately 2-foot-tall Stormtrooper figure.
Police saw a broken glass plate on the ground and “disarray inside the bedroom.”
Alagao said she was mad at her boyfriend, but didn’t mean to hit him. The boyfriend said he didn’t want to press charges. Alagao, of Port St. Lucie, was arrested on a battery charge. She was taken to the St. Lucie County Jail.

Naked man accused of breaking into home and destroying $50,000 worth of property
A naked man from Rochester Hills, Michigan, allegedly caused about
$50,000 damage to a Bloomfield Township home before police interrupted
his rampage earlier this month, authorities said.
Bloomfield Township police were dispatched to a home at 3pm on April 10,
according to a report released on Thursday. Inside, they found Daniel
Elliot, 53, a former family member who had allegedly broken into the
home while the family were on vacation.
“Furniture was turned over and damaged, china was smashed, doors were broken, and several faucets were broke, causing the rooms to flood,” Bloomfield Township Police Det. Sgt.John Weise said. Weise said the amount of damage suggested Elliot had been in the home for a “significant amount of time.”
The $50,000 damage figure is a “rough estimate,” he said. Weise didn’t speculate about why Elliot had taken off his clothes. Elliot was arrested at the scene. He was arraigned on Wednesday on charges of second-degree home invasion and malicious destruction of property. He remains in the Oakland County Jail on $50,000 bond.
