The average life expectancy in the world in 2012 was 70 years. In the
United States it's 79 and here in the Netherlands it's 81. As animal
species go, humans are pretty hearty, especially given all these fancy
medicines we've developed.
But we're not the only ones who hope to live long lives. Other birds and mammals and fish and microbes manage to live longer. Some a lot longer.
