Community Constable Paul Sampson said a man was captured on CCTV footage
breaking into the transfer station operated by Smart Environmental in
Westport at about 2.30am.
"A plastic white bucket and an external security camera were all that
was taken. But considerable effort has gone into getting into this
place. It's a secure area where they sort out the rubbish.
"They broke several locks, disabled an alarm and climbed fences to get in," he
said. A CCTV image shows the man touching a door handle without gloves.
Sampson said finger prints were being processed.
Smart Environmental South Island area manager Yuri Schokking said it was
the fifth break-in at the dump's weigh bridge kiosk in a year.
There was only a small amount of cash left on site, but the damage caused was considerable. "It has cost a considerable amount over the five break-ins and the cost goes back to the ratepayer. It wastes our time and makes our staff feel very uncomfortable," he said. "Someone should be able to recognize this person. It has been the same MO every time so could be the same person every time. This is the first time we've got a clear image which we've given to the police."
