It's the Atmosphere

As the sun's energy levels dipped so did temperatures in the North Atlantic, which then may have cooled the climate in Europe.
The Chicxulub asteroid impact triggered intense acid rain and ocean acidification resulting in the Cretaceous-Palaeogene mass extinction event 66 million years ago.
Open ocean clouds have been found to contain biological substances that can be traced to the waters where they formed.
