A patient's vision was impaired after a nurse in southern Sweden tried
to remove a healthy eye instead of the patient's prosthetic one. The incident occurred in Småland, when the nurse was supposed to be removing the patient's prosthetic eye for cleaning.
However, the nurse, who has 20 years' experience in healthcare, used a
suction device on the wrong eye and left the patient's vision damaged in
their only good eye.
The nurse said the patient had given inaccurate information about which side had the prosthetic, information that became apparent after the nurse tried twice to remove the healthy eye.
The botched efforts left the patient's eye bloody.
While the patient's eyesight has been impaired, a doctor noted that the
damage was not especially serious and that a specialist had been called
in for consultation.
The incident has been reported to the National Board of Health and
Welfare.
