Could flowers bloom on icy moon Europa?

The Arctic Poppy and other high-latitude flowers have parabolic shapes to focus sunlight on the reproductive parts at their centres. Physicist Freeman Dyson says such plants might evolve on other worlds as well (Image: Ansgar Walk)Possibly, says physicist and futurist Freeman Dyson, who argues that we should hunt for life where it is easiest to find, not where we think it is most likely.

Early domestic animals were surprisingly well bred

They may not have known about genetics and Darwinism, but our ancestors knew how to drive the evolution of once-wild beasts to serve their own needs.

Dark matter 'highway' funnels gas into galactic pileup

The remnants of four different galaxy clusters comprise the large cluster MACSJ0717. The galaxy cluster labelled "C" is thought to be the "original" cluster, while the motions (arrows) of clusters B, D, and A are all thought to have been funnelled into the cluster from an attached filament (lower left). (The cluster labelled "A" is thought to have moved through the larger cluster once and is now falling back towards its centre.) (Image: X-ray (NASA/CXC/IfA/C Ma et al.); Optical (NASA/STScI/IfA/C Ma et al.))The first tantalizing signs of gas within a filament of dark matter have been glimpsed at the site of a cataclysmic collision between galaxy clusters.

Mom of Yankees Joba Chamberlain Arrested in Nebraska for Selling Meth

The estranged mother of Yankees star pitcher Joba Chamberlain has been busted for allegedly dealing drugs, authorities said.

Jacqueline Standley, 44, was arrested Saturday at her Nebraska apartment on felony charges of selling a gram of methamphetamine to an undercover cop, said police Capt. David Beggs.

Standley was being held Monday night on $5,000 bail after being arraigned in the same Lincoln courtroom where her famous son pleaded guilty last month to drunken-driving charges.

Beggs said an undercover cop paid Standley $110 for the small plastic bag of speed. He said the transaction happened Feb. 11 at Standley's apartment, which features a shrine to her son with photos and news clippings of his baseball accomplishments.

Standley's arrest was delayed until laboratory tests done on the substance purchased from her confirmed it was meth, Beggs said.

She was charged with delivery of an exceptionally hazardous drug, a class 2 felony punishable by 1 to 50 years in prison. Standley told a judge that she could not afford an attorney. A public defender was appointed to represent her.

In an interview with the Daily News in October, Standley said she had been estranged from her 23-year-old son for the past two years.

Chamberlain was raised by his father, Harlan Chamberlain, who uses a wheelchair after a childhood bout with polio.

Standley admitted her struggles with alcohol and drug abuse greatly damaged her relationship with her son. She told the Lincoln Journal Star that she saw less and less of her son as she started heavily using pot and meth. "No, I wasn't the greatest mother," she said.

After the Yankees' loss to the Red Sox Monday night, Joba Chamberlain acknowledged knowing about the arrest prior to the game, but said it had "been awhile" since the two last spoke.

"She's still my mom and I still love her," he said. "That's the long and short of it. You handle it. You've only got one mom, man. You have to be thankful for her, love her and pray for her."

Daily Horoscope

Today's horoscope says:

When things get tricky today, it might be easy to let someone else take over the decision-making, but is it in your best interest? You're up for whatever challenges come along, so don't sit on the sidelines. Jump in there and start getting things done -- be more actively involved in what you're doing today. Every challenge is an opportunity to be proud of yourself, so if you let those situations pass you by, or you allow someone else take care of them, you're cheating yourself.

Oh, No! Can't go cheating myself, now can I?
