Thousands of utility customers in western North Carolina have awakened again to power outages caused by winter weather, and signs point to another storm on the way.
Duke Energy has approximately 8,500 customers still out in Henderson, Polk, Transylvania and Jackson counties. In all, the utility reported 17,294 outages as of 1:30 p.m., many of them in the western part of North Carolina.
In Henderson County, 700 workers from Georgia and South Carolina were called in to help Duke Energy restore power to more than 13,000 customers. By Sunday afternoon, the number had been reduced to 5,502 customers.
Progress Energy reported fewer than 100 outages across North Carolina.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service say a storm could leave a wintry mix in western North Carolina on Tuesday morning.
