Philosopher or devil?


This burrowing crayfish, Cambarus diogenes, shares a name with a Greek philospher – although admittedly one with a sour outlook.

But it is often called the devil crayfish. Leaving one to presume that the burrows it digs remind people of the traditional location of the underworld.
