School official caught on camera taking iguana sculpture
An elected member of the Pojoaque Valley School Board in Jaconita, New
Mexico, has been accused of stealing a 50-pound, 4-foot long, bronze
iguana sculpture from a table inside a Buffalo Thunder Resort and
Casino restaurant.
Investigators said surveillance video shows Jon Paul Romero walk out the casino's door carrying the large lizard, valued at $6,000.
Santa Fe County sheriff's deputies found the iguana statue in Romero's home and returned it to its proper owner.
Romero's attorney said his client was drinking alcohol the night he
stole the statue.
Romero has a history of driving drunk. The district attorney said she
won't press charges against Romero for the theft if he completes counseling.
That program is offered to people who haven't previously committed felonies.
Romero's fellow school board members said they are sad and disappointed with his actions and surprised considering how dedicated he is to his job.
