Fourth grader suspended for using broken pencil sharpener

From the "Get Real" department:

pencil-sharpener-terror.jpg

Today, September 12th 2008 will be remembered as the day we finally caught one of the bad guys ...

A 4th grader with a broken pencil sharpener.

A 10-year-old Hilton Head Island boy has been suspended from school for having something most students carry in their supply boxes: a pencil sharpener.

The problem was his sharpener had broken, but he decided to use it anyway.

The boy -- a fourth-grader described as a well-behaved and good student -- cried during the meeting with his mom, the deputy and the school's assistant principal.

He had no criminal intent in having the blade at school, the sheriff's report stated, but was suspended for at least two days and could face further disciplinary action.

Fourth grader suspended for using broken pencil sharpener

The deputy and assistant principal should be on a two-day suspension and be facing further disciplinary action for even batting an eye over this.

Come on people Get Real here!

Terror cops hunt down ornamental Castor bean plant

Another story in the continuing saga of our homeland insecurity ...

A man in Orem, Utah had the Homeland Security flying squad at his house because he'd planted a Castor bean plant on his front lawn, prompting a neighbor or passing snitch to decide he was making Ricin:
A startled homeowner got a visit from Orem Police Tuesday afternoon. They were interested in a plant that he was growing by his mailbox in the front yard. They were so interested that they put a call into Homeland Security. No, it wasn’t marijuana. It was a Castor bean plant...

He says with a laugh, “I’m not a terrorist, but I was terribly frightened when the call came in. I was terrorized (for) my humble little plant that’s over there in the corner.”

Orem man's bean plant investigated

Okay, I realize it was in Utah, but really?!

North Texas house burns because local authorities switched off hydrants "to fight terrorism"

A house in North Texas burned down because the local authorities had switched off the fire-hydrants to stop terrorists from poisoning the water supply through them?! Huh!?
All the district's hydrants, including those in Alexander Ranch, have had their water turned off since just after 9/11 - something a trade association spokesman tells us is common practice for rural systems.

"These hydrants need to be cut off in a way to prevent vandalism or any kind of terrorist activity, including something in the water lines," Hodges said.

But Hodges says fire departments know, or should have known, the water valves can be turned back on with a tool.

Turned back on with a tool? So these fire-hydrants will prevent terrorists who could poison the water supply through them, but only if they cannot of get a tool?!

So, who is the Tool that thought this up? On the stupid-meter, this is a 12 and the meter only goes from 1 to 10!

Germ-free baby under glass: scientific parenting of 1947

The lost art of parenting, 1947-style:

Little John Gray Jr., three months old when these pictures were taken, has seldom been outside of this glass house in which he lives.
His showcase home is temperature and humidity controlled, dirt-free and has a built-in air filter.
It is partially sound-proof-he can bellow without straining the family nerves.
He doesn’t catch cold; visitors can’t pass their germs through the glass and the house’s temperature never varies from 84 degrees.
At the slightest deviation, a bell rings.
There are no drafts and neither is there the fear of smothering; there are no bed covers.
Papa John Gray Sr. built the ingenious baby house in the workshop of his home in Sea Cliff, Long Island, New York.
Only time will tell whether the child will escape the usual ills.

'Take a Child Outside' week gains ground

A large group of well-meaning officials from several states have a message for you and your family: Go take a hike.

They're urging moms and dads to take their kids away from the television and go outside for some fresh air as part of "Take a Child Outside" week from Sept. 24-30.

The special week began last year in North Carolina, and has now spread throughout much of the U.S.

About 250 organizations in the U.S. and Canada are taking part this year.

The only question is: Do children really need a themed week to encourage them to play outside?

If so, then you know we are in a pathetic shape as a nation - and the way it looks ... we are in a pathetic shape as a nation.

And no, I do not mean just physically, I mean the over all well-being and the actual need to get the kids out of the house to play and just be a kid.

Back in the day it was the opposite problem - getting us to come into the house was a monumental task.

Times have sure changed.

Navajos seeks full control of national monument

The Navajo Nation is seeking full control of one of the only national monuments entirely on reservation land, the majestic Canyon de Chelly and its hundreds of ancient rock carvings and paintings.

Since 1931, the National Park Service has been charged with preserving thousands of artifacts and ruins within the monument's towering red sandstone walls, while the land revered by the Navajos as sacred remained tribally owned.

Now the Tribal Council wants full control of the 131-square-mile monument in northeastern Arizona and the more than $1.8 million in federal funding that goes with it.

Doing so would strengthen the tribe's sovereignty and demonstrate its expertise and competence in administering tribal land and resources to benefit Navajo people, supporters say.

Canyon de Chelly, near Chinle, in the heart of the Navajo Nation, has been inhabited for some 2,000 years.
Artifacts and cliff dwellings lining the canyon walls date from the 4th to 14th centuries.
The Navajo call the canyon "tsegi," which means "within the rock."

Charged for their Rape Kit?!

Charging a rape victim for the cost of the medical exam commonly known (thanks to Law&OrderSVU) as a "rape kit" is beneath all contempt, yet that is exactly what that shill shrew did in Wasilla and wants to do in the entire nation.

Not only do you have to keep a fetus conceived during your raping but you have to pay for the exam afterward!!!?

This election is over.
No one with any sense of decency or moral fiber will vote for that hag now.
Americans may stupid but NOT that stupid!

Facing Certain Death

Residents living in single-family homes in some parts of coastal Texas face "certain death" if they do not heed orders to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Ike's arrival, the National Weather Service said tonight.

The unusually strong wording came in a weather advisory regarding storm surge along the shoreline of Galveston Bay, which could see maximum water levels of 15 to 22 feet, the agency said.

"All neighborhoods ... and possibly entire coastal communities ... will be inundated during the period of peak storm tide," the advisory said. "Persons not heeding evacuation orders in single-family one- or two-story homes will face certain death."

Cocky Wacko

Another recovering republican ... former Rhode Island republican senator Lincoln chafee has called vice presidential candidate sarah palin a "cocky wacko" and said her selection as McPain's running mate has energized supporters of democrat Barack Obama.

Chafee left the republican party last year after losing his bid for re-election and now supports Obama...

"People were coming into my office, phone calls were flooding in, e-mails were coming in, 'I just sent money to Obama, I couldn't sleep last night' — from the left. To see this cocky wacko up there," Chafee said to laughter.

Report on murder at Fort Bragg

A pregnant soldier's unit at Fort Bragg didn't follow procedures for keeping track of newly arrived personnel, the Army said in a report Thursday on the disappearance of the woman, whose body was found this summer at an off-base motel.

The report also said one noncommissioned officer had been reprimanded for lying during the investigation, but the report said the oversights and mistakes would not have prevented the death of Spc. Megan L. Touma, 23, of Cold Spring, Ky.

Two other sergeants were reprimanded, one for not getting Touma's phone number the day she reported to the post and the other for not telling the company commander and senior sergeant he'd heard there might be a problem regarding the woman.

No commissioned officers were reprimanded, said Fort Bragg spokesman Tom McCollum.

"Accountability of all of our soldiers falls to the noncommissioned officer chain," McCollum said.

The sergeant who lied "made it appear he followed all the procedures," he added

Touma was a dental specialist who arrived June 12 at Fort Bragg after traveling from a base in Germany.

Her decomposing body was found June 21 in a motel room bathtub not far from the North Carolina base.

The report said the noncommissioned officer in charge of Touma's unit, the 19th Replacement Co., failed to follow "a number of redundant checks and balances."

Sgt. Edgar Patino, 27, of Hope Mills, was the father of Touma's unborn baby and has been charged with first-degree murder.

Investigators said Touma and the married Patino began a relationship while both were stationed in Germany.

Chavez orders US ambassador out

It has come to this:

President Hugo Chavez ordered the U.S. ambassador to leave Venezuela in 72 hours and said he was immediately withdrawing his ambassador from Washington.

Chavez said Thursday night that U.S. Ambassador Patrick Duddy is no longer welcome, just as his close ally Bolivia expelled the American envoy from La Paz a day earlier.

And with they way the cabal has acted over the last 7 plus years I am surprised it took this long.

More drug infested water

Testing prompted by an Associated Press story that revealed trace amounts of pharmaceuticals in drinking water supplies has shown that more Americans are affected by the problem than previously thought - at least 46 million.

That's up from 41 million people reported by the AP in March as part of an investigation into the presence of pharmaceuticals in the nation's waterways.

The AP stories prompted federal and local legislative hearings, brought about calls for mandatory testing and disclosure, and led officials in at least 27 additional metropolitan areas to analyze their drinking water.

Positive tests were reported in 17 cases, including Reno, Nev., Savannah, Ga., Colorado Springs, Colo., and Huntsville, Ala.

Results are pending in three others.

The test results, added to data from communities and water utilities that bowed to pressure to disclose earlier test results, produce the new total of Americans known to be exposed to drug-contaminated drinking water supplies.

The Top Five Weirdest Goals

Soccer can be interesting:

History does repeat ...

In response to the horror that was Adolf Hitler, Charlie Chaplin made a film titled "The Great Dictator" in which he - with humor both subtle and bludgeoning - rebuked in the most strident of terms the idolatry of Hitler.

This video is of the 'final' speech of the film and it is as true today as it was in 1941 with the horror that is the shrub and the cabal (idolaters of that certain Austrian paper hanger) and McPain and Palen wanting to continue the same old same old.

The nude photos didn't hurt after all

A bit more fluff:

Vanessa Hudgens is now a millionare.

The star of Disney's "High School Musical"
is listed in Forbes Magazine's 2008 top paid performers.

No votes from her friends ...

Even Palin's friends won't vote for her!

And the repugicans think the rest of us will?!

Damn, if they are that deluded (and they are) I have some land about three miles east of Miami I'd like to unload - cheap.

And I Quote

probably believes that the iceberg could have saved the Titanic."

Salvia Divinorum

Salvia divinorum is a very potent psychoactive herb that has intense dissociative effects when smoked. According to researchers, it's likely the most potent natural hallucinogen gram for gram. Salvia divinorum is mostly legal in the United States, but maybe not for much longer. YouTube has thousands of videos of people tripping on it and lawmakers are now pointing to those clips as evidence that the herb should be criminalized. Meanwhile, it's also being studied by pharmacologists for possible use in treating pain, depression, and addiction.

From the New York Times:
Wikipedia Commons Thumb 8 82 Salvia Divinorum - Herba De Maria.Jpg 260Px-Salvia Divinorum - Herba De MariaWhen the federal government this year published its first estimates of salvia use, the data astonished many: some 1.8 million people had tried it in their lifetimes, including 750,000 in the previous year. Among males 18 to 25, where consumption is heaviest, nearly 3 percent reported using salvia in the previous year, making it twice as prevalent as LSD and nearly as popular as Ecstasy.

Recent studies at college campuses on both coasts have yielded estimates as high as 7 percent. The herb’s presence on military ships and bases has prompted enough concern about readiness that the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology was asked to develop the first urinalysis for salvia and is now testing 50 samples a month....

“We have this incredible new compound, the first in its class; it absolutely has potential medical use, and here we’re talking about throttling it because some people get intoxicated on it,” said Dr. John Mendelson, a pharmacologist at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute who, with federal financing, is studying salvia’s impact on humans. “It couldn’t be more foolish from a business point of view.”

Ralph Stanley Endorses Obama

Ralph Stanley endorses Obama!

What makes this important?

Ike is getting stronger and heading for Texas

Hurricane Ike grew stronger as it barreled across the warm, energizing waters of the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday toward the Texas coast after crashing through Cuba's tobacco country and toppling aging Havana buildings.

Forecasters said the Category 1 storm at 4pm eastern time (now a Category 2 at 5:30pm eastern time) could become a major Category 3 hurricane before slamming into Texas or northern Mexico on Saturday.

Texas officials have started to evacuate the first of millions of residents who could be in the storm's path.

Ike has bloomed to a Category 2 storm and was likely to grow even stronger before its predicted strike on the Texas coast early Saturday.

Officials in Matagorda County, about halfway between Houston and Corpus Christi, began a mandatory evacuation for residents in its coastal portions.
County Judge Nate McDonald said his region expected to be the epicenter of the storm.

If more Texas officials order a mandatory exodus, it would be the first large-scale evacuation in South Texas history.

State and county officials let people decide for themselves whether to leave a hurricane area until just before Hurricane Rita struck the Gulf Coast in 2005.
Now county officials can order people out of harm's way.

Texas emergency officials were taking no chances with the lives of its medically fragile citizens. Residents with special needs in the Corpus Christi area were set to start leaving by bus for San Antonio, and the state opened a northbound shoulder lane on Interstate 37 to accommodate the heavier traffic created by people who wished to leave.

Wine critic Parker facing defamation charges

A Paris investigating judge has filed preliminary charges against influential American wine critic Robert M. Parker for alleged defamation against a former assistant, judicial officials said Wednesday.

The judge is looking into a lawsuit brought by Parker's former assistant Hanna Agostini, who broke with the critic and co-authored a book in France with a title that translates as "Robert Parker: Anatomy of a Myth."

Agostini, who brought the case last year, herself faces preliminary charges in Bordeaux involving alleged forgery in a wine-trafficking affair centering on Belgian wine trader Geens.

She denies the allegations.

The charges were filed Friday against Parker for writing on his Internet site that Agostini "could end up stagnating in prison," and for misrepresenting the penalties that she faces, the officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Parker's lawyer said the critic declined comment about the case.

He was fined $2,820 by a Paris court in March for violating Agostini's presumption of innocence.

"Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide" is a well-known reference book, and his recommendations can make or break winemakers.

His publication, the Wine Advocate, assigns scores of up to 100 points to the wines it samples.

He has been called the most powerful critic in the world.

Governator to be recalled

The union representing state prison guards filed a formal notice Tuesday that it will seek to recall governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Once the notice is certified by the secretary of state, the union has 160 days to collect slightly more than 1 million signatures to place the question before voters during a special election next year.

*****
I wish them luck (though they really don't need any ... with the way the 'governator' has fucked up California collecting a million signatures will be a breeze).

Susan Sarandon's daughter says mom's fashion-challenged

Now for a bit of fluff:

Eva Amurri says she has nothing in common with mother Susan Sarandon when it come to style.

"She is really very very very disinterested in fashion," Amurri said at the Tuesday night presentation of Max Azria's spring collection at New York Fashion Week.
"She doesn't care. She wears her gym clothes from when she comes back from the gym until night. Sometimes she puts a jacket over it if I really beg her to, but she doesn't really care very much."

The 23-year-old actress is Sarandon's daughter with Italian filmmaker Franco Amurri. Sarandon, 61, has two other children by her longtime partner, actor Tim Robbins.

Amurri starred alongside Sarandon in the 2002 film "The Banger Sisters." Her other credits include the 2004 dark comedy "Saved!" and the upcoming "New York, I Love You."

No questions; Palin sticks to her script

John McCain took a risk in picking little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as a running mate, but now the campaign's playing it safer. She's sticking to a greatest hits version of her convention speech on the campaign trail and steering clear of questions until she's comfortable enough for a hand-picked interviewer later this week.

More than 40 million people tuned in last week to listen to the speech from Palin, the 44-year-old, first-term governor whom McCain announced as his surprise vice presidential pick just days before. Since then, that basic script is all anyone has heard from her publicly, and her only interaction with the media was a brief conversation with a small group of reporters on her plane Monday - off the record at her handlers' insistence.

An aide told the journalists on board that all Palin flights would be off the record unless the media were told otherwise. At least one reporter objected. Two people on the flight said the Palins greeted the media and they chatted about who had been to Alaska, but little else was said.

By comparison, her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden, has been campaigning on his own, at times taking questions from audiences. He split off to campaign separately from Barack Obama the day after Obama announced his selection. They reunited at their party's convention and spent the following weekend campaigning together.

Biden's appearances have touched on a range of issues - in Florida he talked about U.S. support for Israel, in Pennsylvania it was economics and tax policy. He was interviewed on NBC's "Meet the Press" last Sunday

Amid growing sniping from Democrats, the McCain campaign announced that Palin would sit down for her first interview this week, with ABC. It will take place over two days at her home in Alaska.

And then?

McCain campaign manager Rick Davis has said Palin will "agree to an interview when we think it's time and when she feels comfortable doing it."

"She's not scared to answer questions," Davis said on "Fox News Sunday."

So far, Palin has barely spoken with voters either. Since the convention, she and McCain have breezed through a Wisconsin ice cream shop, a New Mexico restaurant and a Missouri barbecue place, shaking hands with diners but not taking any questions. Photographers and television cameras have been allowed full view while reporters are typically kept too far away to ask questions or hear most of the conversations.

Her public remarks essentially have been excerpts of her convention speech, delivered while introducing McCain at rallies.

Her schedule released Tuesday shows she will attend a "welcome home" rally in Fairbanks, Alaska, on Wednesday evening - her first major campaign appearance without McCain at her side and his advisers hanging in the wings.

To be sure, all candidates running for office give the same remarks over and over - Barack Obama's stump speech has hardly changed throughout the campaign, and McCain has been telling familiar stories and jokes for months.

But none of the candidates in this race has been so shielded from the media, so protected from any spontaneous situation, and Palin's unvarying remarks give the impression that she and her message are being tightly controlled.

As before her convention speech, McCain's campaign is briefing Palin for her first TV interview.

After a rally Tuesday in Lancaster, Pa., a group of supporters waiting outside to shake hands with McCain and Palin screamed for her to jump up on an outdoor platform, as McCain had just done, and speak to them.

"Speech! Speech!" they cried. She continued down the line, shaking hands, and then hopped into an SUV.

In her prepared remarks, there are always descriptions of McCain as a "man who's there to serve his country and not just his party." He's someone who's "not looking for a fight but is not afraid of one either." He "doesn't run with the Washington herd." He's the only man in this election "who has ever really fought for you."

And always the same details about herself, how she "stood up to the special interests, the lobbyists, big oil companies and the good ol' boys network," as a mayor and then governor in Alaska.

A crowd favorite in her speech is that story about how she got rid of luxuries in the state Capitol, like a personal driver, chef and luxury jet.

"I put it on eBay," she says.

Audiences love this part, but what Palin never adds is that the jet didn't sell on eBay despite numerous attempts. The state eventually hired an aircraft broker to unload it.

Rain water helped NC woman survive ravine

A North Carolina woman said today (Wednesday) she survived five days trapped in a wrecked truck at the bottom of a ravine by squeezing water from a leaf and thinking about her family.

Amber Pennell said on NBC's "Today" show that she doesn't remember the crash Aug. 20 on U.S. Hwy. 321 in Lenoir, in rural western North Carolina, or much about the five days she spent trapped in the truck, covered by thick kudzu vines.

Pennell said she reached out a broken window to squeeze water from a leaf and recalls hearing helicopters as about 100 searchers looked for her.

The 21-year-old woman was rescued after searchers checked the location again, saw faint tire tracks and then saw part of her truck.

Pennell is recovering from a broken leg and broken arm and other injuries.

She sat in a wheelchair during the interview and wore a pink cast on her right forearm.

She said thoughts of her two children and her husband buoyed her during the ordeal.

Pennell also said she doesn't remember going off the road as she drove home after a shift at a restaurant.

"I know my children kept me going," she said. "My children mean everything to me. There's no doubt in my mind they are what kept me going and my husband kept me going."

Pennell also said she hopes to be walking soon.

"I know I will again, I just don't know how long it will take," she said. "I'm giving it a week, that's my goal, but you know, it could be a lot longer."

Scientists cheer atom smasher's success

Scientists today (Wednesday) applauded as one of the most ambitious experiments ever conceived got successfully underway, with protons being fired around a 27-kilometer (17-mile) tunnel deep beneath the border of France and Switzerland in an attempt to unlock the secrets of the universe.

The Large Hadron Collider -- a $9 billion particle accelerator designed to simulate conditions of the Big Bang that created the physical Universe -- was switched on at 0732 GMT to cheers and applause from experts gathered to witness the event.

While observers were left nonplussed by the anticlimactic flashing dots on a TV screen that signalled the machine's successful test run, among teams of scientists involved around the world there were jubilant celebrations and popping champagne corks.

Now if it only doesn't create a 'black hole' we should be okay.

Freaky Friday

There have been some strange things happen in this world and this political campaign has it's share.

Gordon Smith over @ ScrutinyHooligans said it well when he said:

"I just saw a McCain/Palin ad claiming that Barack Obama is “more of the same” and that McCain will bring “change”.

The McCain folks are really going to try to pull a Freaky Friday and turn McCain into Obama and Obama into McCain. McCain is the change candidate? That’s absurd on its face. Obama is more of the same? If “the same” were sane foreign policy, true energy independence, affordable health care for every American, and tax cuts for the middle class, then McCain would be right.

But the fact is that he’s simply lying and expecting that folks won’t notice. It’s one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever seen."

Try as I might I cannot fathom how stupid the repugicans think Americans are?! Even though as a whole Americans have a stupid gene that rears its ugly head every so often and they do idiotic things like vote for Raygun ... TWICE!

Enron shareholders and investors will split billions

In the largest settlement in the history of U.S. securities fraud cases, Enron shareholders and investors will split more than $7.2 billion from financial institutions accused of playing a role in the energy giant's downfall.

About 1.5 million people and entities are eligible to share in the distribution of the money, according to Dan Newman, a spokesman for the law firm that represented the lead plaintiffs.

"Investors will get an average of $6.79 per share of common stock and an average of $168.50 per share of preferred stock," Newman said.

To be eligible for the settlement, investors and shareholders needed to have purchased Enron or Enron-related securities between September 9, 1997, and December 2, 2001.

Redneck Letter

Dearest Redneck Son,

I'm writing this slow because I know you can't read fast. We don't live where we did when you left home. Your dad read in the newspaper that most accidents happen within 20 miles of your home, so we moved. I won't be able to send you the address because the last West Virginia family that lived here took the house numbers when they moved so they wouldn't have to change their address.

This place is really nice. It even has a washing machine. I'm not sure about it. I put a load of clothes in and pulled the chain. We haven't seen them since.

The weather isn't bad here. It only rained twice last week; the first time for three days and the second time for four days.

About that coat you wanted me to send; your Uncle Billy Bob said it would be too heavy to send in the mail with the buttons on, so we cut them off and put them in the pockets.

Bubba locked his keys in the car yesterday. We were really worried because it took him two hours to get me and your father out.

Your sister had a baby this morning, but I haven't found out what it is yet so I don't know if you are an aunt or uncle.

Uncle Bobby Ray fell into a whiskey vat last week. Some men tried to pull him out but he fought them off and drowned. We had him cremated, he burned for three days..

Three of your friends went off a bridge in a pickup truck. Butch was driving. He rolled down the window and swam to safety. Your other two friends were in the back. They drowned because they couldn't get the tailgate down!

There isn't much more news at this time. Nothing much out of the normal has happened.

Your Favorite Aunt,

Klansman's cold-case conviction overturned

An appeals court has overturned the conviction last year of a Ku Klux Klan member in the deaths of two black Mississippi teenagers in 1964.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans says it agrees with arguments by James Ford Seale's attorney that the statute of limitations in the case had expired.

Seale was convicted of kidnapping and conspiracy in the abductions of Charles Eddie Moore and Henry Hezekiah Dee.

Both men were 19.

The men disappeared from Franklin County in Mississippi on May 2, 1964.

Their decomposed bodies were pulled more than two months later from the Mississippi River.

Seale has been serving three life sentences.

The case was among many unsolved civil-rights-era crimes prosecutors have revived since the early 1990s.

Now those revived cases are on shaky grounds.

Does the US military have some super new capability?

On CBS's 60 Minutes, famed journalist Bob Woodward talked about his new book The War Within: A Secret White House History 2006-2008, about the Iraq war. During the interview, he made a vague reference to a breakthrough super secret weapon or capability he claims the US military has that is comparable to the advent of the tank and the airplane.

From CBS News:
"This is very sensitive and very top secret, but there are secret operational capabilities that have been developed by the military to locate, target, and kill leaders of al Qaeda in Iraq, insurgent leaders, renegade militia leaders. That is one of the true breakthroughs," Woodward told (60 Minutes correspondent Scott) Pelley.

"But what are we talking about here? It's some kind of surveillance? Some kind of targeted way of taking out just the people that you're looking for? The leadership of the enemy?" Pelley asked.

"I'd love to go through the details, but I'm not going to," Woodward replied...

"If you were an al Qaeda leader or part of the insurgency in Iraq, or one of these renegade militias, and you knew about what they were able to do, you'd get your ass outta town."

Army suicide rate could top nation's this year

The rate of suicides among-active duty soldiers is on pace to surpass both last year's numbers and the rate of suicide in the general U.S. population for the first time since the Vietnam war, according to U.S. Army officials.

As of August, 62 Army soldiers have committed suicide, and 31 cases of possible suicide remain under investigation, according to Army statistics. Last year, the Army recorded 115 suicides among its ranks, which was also higher than the previous year.

Palin's Lies ... so far

Palin's lies so far!
Let's count them shall we!

Lie #1) Was against the "Bridge to nowhere" - When in fact she campaigned for governor on a pro-bridge platform, lobbied for it, fought against its cancellation, and then kept the money once it was cancelled.

Lie #2) Fights against earmarks -When in fact as mayor of Wasilla she hired lobbyists to gather earmarks for her tiny town, which received $27 million in just 3 years - the per capita record in America.

Lie #3) She "sold the state's luxury jet on eBay" (at a profit! adds McCain) - it was listed on eBay, but did not sell. She turned it over to a broker who sold it at a $600,000 loss to a Palin contributor.

Lie #4) To the dismay of her kids she fired the state provided chef that cooked for them. - When in fact she merely reassigned the chef to a different position, a change of title, but she continued to cook for the Palin's.

Lie #5) She has fought against high taxes. - When in fact she raised taxes. Alaska has the 4th highest per capita taxes of any state in the USA.

Lie #6) She is a reformer who slashes government spending - When in fact, both as Mayor and Governor Palin has exploded government spending - despite setting a per capita record of well over $3000 in federal earmarks per resident in Wasilla she left the town $20 million in debt. The state of Alaska ranks #1 in spending per capita - more than double the national average. A big part of that is the $3200 'rebate' the state sends to each citizen every year (which also accounts for Palin's popularity - she increased it from a mere $2000 per year). Yet despite the fact that Alaska is awash in oil money, it ranks #1 in federal money spent in the state per resident.

While this not exactly a campaign lie, it is a new outrage:
Palin collected nearly $17,000 in per diems from the state of Alaska for 312 nights spent in her own home.
Amazingly enough, in Alaska this may not be illegal?!
Now imagine what the McCain campaign and the press would say if Obama did this for even a single night.

Well, at least these "Lies" are entertaining:

Group says: Raise driving age

Taking aim at a longstanding rite of passage for 16-year-olds, an influential auto safety group is calling on states to raise the age for getting a driver's license to 17 or even 18.

Adrian Lund, president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a research group funded by the auto insurance industry, acknowledged the idea is "a tough sell," but noted that car crashes are the leading cause of death among teenagers.

"The bottom line is that when we look at the research, raising the driving age saves lives," Lund said.

He plans to present the proposal Tuesday at the annual conference of the Governors Highway Safety Association in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Not surprisingly, a lot of teens hate the idea.

*****

Two things wrong with the 'logic' behind this:
First the 'research' was done by the insurance companies or done for with with their funding.
Second the numbers are skewed but will not remain so because the baby boomers and the baby boomer's children are all driving now and the number of teenagers driving is actually decreasing instead of increasing as it has for the last half century.

Now, this is not to say it isn't a good idea to rethink the age which we allow someone to drive but the reasons they are using are not what should be a 'deciding' factor.

The best solution would be to train drivers better ... some people driving today haven't a clue as to what they are doing and it makes the roads that much more dangerous.

An example of this is when some 45 year old from New York city comes to North Carolina and gets a drivers permit having never before driven a car then tells everyone that North Carolinians who have been driving for years (some of my generation since they were 8 or 9 and drove farm equipment around and 11 or 12 when they started driving cars, the 'legal' age is 16 but tell that to the farmers), can not drive.
What is so funny about that is around here when you pass a wrecked car in a ditch or flipped over it has one of three plates on the back of it ... New York, New Jersey, or Ohio - and WE can't drive?

So, age has little to do with the ability to drive a car until later in life when the motor skills and reaction to situations time begins to slow.
Better trained drivers would be much more of a help in saving lives - some teens are more capable than others just as some adults are more capable than others.

Heinz Award winners for 2008

Dr. Joseph DeRisi, a molecular biologist who is searching for a cure for malaria is among five people being named Heinz Award winners today.

The annual $250,000 prize is given to people who make notable contributions in the arts and humanities; the environment; the human condition; public policy; and technology, the economy and employment.

DeRisi invented the ViroChip, a small glass wafer containing some 22,000 DNA sequences from more than 1,300 viral families.
It enables scientists to identify existing viruses and detect new ones.
Using the ViroChip, DeRisi and his colleagues at the University of California at San Francisco, have cracked malaria's genetic code, which may lead to drug and vaccine therapy.
He gives most of his research and knowledge away for free.

The Pittsburgh-based Heinz Family Foundation has presented the awards since 1994 in memory of Sen. John Heinz III, heir to the Heinz food fortune who died in a 1991 plane crash.
The awards will be presented at a private ceremony in Pittsburgh on Oct. 21.

Other recipients this year include:

Thomas FitzGerald, of Louisville, Ky., won the environment award.
FitzGerald is founder and director of the Kentucky Resources Council, which has been dubbed the state's watchdog of the environment.

Robert Greenstein, of Washington, D.C., won the public policy award.
Greenstein is founder and executive director of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, which analyzes the impact of federal and state budgets and tax policies on low- and moderate-income people.

Ann Hamilton, of Columbus, Ohio, won the arts and humanities award.
Hamilton is an artist and a professor of art at Ohio State University. Her work has appeared in exhibitions around the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.

Brenda Krause Eheart, of Champaign, Ill., won the human condition award.
Eheart is founder of both Generations of Hope and Hope Meadows, where foster children, their adoptive parents and seniors live as neighbors.

Copycat?

Police investigating claims that a Polish man imprisoned and raped his daughter were seeking DNA samples Tuesday from the two children she says he fathered.

The 21-year-old woman told police she was held captive for six years and forced to give the two boys up for adoption.

Police were trying to find them to determine if the accused man is their father.

The case bears a striking similarity to that of Austrian Josef Fritzl, accused of holding his daughter in a cellar for 24 years, repeatedly sexually abusing her and fathering her seven children.

The case in Poland involves a 45-year-old man identified only as Krzysztof B., in keeping with Polish privacy laws.

Police detained him on Friday in the eastern city of Siedlce after his wife and daughter came forward with the allegations.

Automobile farmers of 1936

This 1936 article on the use of the "Chinese soy bean" to make Ford cars is a wonderful example of the common English of the time.

PLASTICS — chemical compounds which, are compressed under heat into desired shapes, and thereafter are not subject to corrosion—are increasingly in use. Some are made of coal-tar products, some of milk; and one, which Henry Ford is now employing extensively, utilizes the Chinese soy bean. This useful plant, is, next to rice, the staff of life in the Celestial republic; like beans, peas, and other “legume” plants, it contains the proteins, or nitrogen compounds, for which we eat meat. Its oil, also, has found many uses; and those who have eaten the great American national dish, chop suey, are familiar with the dark soy sauce which accompanies it. The mechanical uses of the soy bean (which does not resemble American beans) are of more recent discovery. It furnishes a fibrous flour, which gives body to a phenol (carbolic acid) compound. Under heat and pressure, this changes into a hard, strong, glossy substance, suitable for buttons, knobs, handles, mouldings, etc. About fifteen pounds of beans are now used in each Ford car, and raised under the direction of the manufacturer.

Desperate and Delusional

Just how desperate and delusional are the repugicans?

They are quite far off the deep end and their latest 'claims' only prove it all over again.

Did you know that all of the Media Icons we American have are repugicans?
Neither did I.
But that is what they are claiming.

First, just what and who are our media icons and what constitutes a 'media icon'?

They list John Wayne - granted he was a 'conservative', but in the true sense and was only a 'republican' like Teddy Roosevelt was, in name only ... his political views were close to the center and it was country first not party - however, John Wayne isn't a 'media icon'.

Then they devolve and dissolve into reveling the true depths of their delusions by continuing the list of repugican amerikkkan media icons with: Spiderman, Batman, Alfred (Batman's butler), Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny ... and list list goes on naming more cartoon characters.
Except for Superman.
Curious.

I wonder what John Wayne feels about being n a list of cartoon characters.

But if all of your 'Icons' are cartoons - maybe the charge that you don't deal well with reality has merit and you should admit it and seek help.

Pastor: GOP may be downplaying Palin's religious beliefs

Pastor: GOP may be downplaying Palin's religious beliefs.

Gee, you think?!

Here is how Randi Kaye a contributor to CNN's AC360 reports it:

For more than two decades, current Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was a practicing Pentecostal.

She belonged to the Wasilla Assembly of God church in her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska. But though she attended the church from her teenage years through to 2002, she hasn't talked much about her religion since joining the Republican ticket.

Palin's former pastor, Tim McGraw, says that like many Pentecostal churches, some members speak in tongues, although he says he's never seen Palin do so. Church member Caroline Spangler told CNN, "When the spirit comes on you, you utter things that nobody else can understand ... only God can understand what is coming out of our mouths."

Some Pentecostals from Assembly of God also believe in "faith healing" and the "end times" -- a violent upheaval that they believe will deliver Jesus Christ's second coming.

"Our basic belief is that God is God and he knows where history is going and he has a purposeful plan and within the middle of that plan we live in an environment in our world where certain events would take place," says McGraw. "Sarah wasn't taught to look for one particular sign -- a cataclysmic sign. She knew as every Christian does ... that God is sovereign and he is in control."

The McCain campaign says the Governor doesn't consider herself Pentecostal.

McGraw says Palin's Pentecostal roots may be being downplayed for a reason: "I think there may be issues of belief that could be misunderstood or played upon by people that don't know."

When asked by CNN about Palin's beliefs, campaign spokeswoman Meghan Stapleton would only say the Republican vice presidential candidate has "deep religious convictions."

But how might her religious beliefs impact policy in Washington if the Republican ticket is successful?

Palin's former pastor says he has no doubt her religious beliefs will influence her decision making when it comes to government policy. Regarding her desire to build an Alaskan pipeline and explore for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, McGraw told CNN, "Sarah knows that in Genesis, God creates the world and it's very good and that we're supposed to be caretakers in terms of not destroying the environment, so there's no way that Sarah is going to exploit or damage the Alaska tundra in the name of getting gas if she doesn't have to." Palin's neighbors react to her swift rise

Six years ago, Palin left Assembly of God to join the non-denominational Wasilla Bible Church. But the Assembly of God says she still returns for special conferences and events, such as the graduation of ministry students in June. Video of a speech she gave at the church just two months before joining the Republican ticket is making the rounds on the Internet.

Speaking of the troops in Iraq, Palin says on the video, ""Pray for our military men and women who are striving do to what is right. Also for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending them out on a task that is from God. That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for -- that there is a plan, and that plan is God's plan."

Her campaign says she doesn't mix her faith with government business. But Palin did ask her audience to pray for $30 billion natural gas pipeline she is on a mission to build in Alaska. In the video Palin says, "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas pipeline built. So pray for that ... I can do my job there in developing my natural resources. But all of that doesn't do any good if the people of Alaska's heart is not good with God."

McGraw, who was her pastor until 1998 and while she was mayor of Wasilla, says Palin attended discipleship classes to strengthen her Pentecostal faith and that he counseled her on how to become a better leader.

"Everyone has a way of viewing the world and Sarah does too and hers would be shaped by the common sense practicality of how she's been shaped by the Bible -- which is basically the world view that says God loves people, people can access him and he's given us wisdom for living," says McGraw.

He says Alaska has already seen Palin's faith play out. As governor she passed ethics reform and took on what she's referred to as a "good-ol'-boys network." However, she has said she would not seek to impose her religious views on others.

"I think one of the most obvious ways it plays out is what you've seen -- is being courageous enough to deal with deception and corruption," says McGraw.

Palin now attends the Wasilla Bible Church. She was there on August 17, just days before entering the national spotlight. David Brickner, the founder of Jews for Jesus, was a speaker. He told congregants that terrorist attacks on Israel were God's "judgment" of Jews who haven't embraced Christianity. Brickner said, "Judgment is very real and we see it played out on the pages of the newspapers and on the television. When a Palestinian from East Jerusalem took a bulldozer and went plowing through a score of cars, killing numbers of people. Judgment -- you can't miss it."

The McCain campaign says his comments do not reflect her religious views. Palin's spokeswoman says she is pro-Israel.

Pastor Ed Kalnin, the senior pastor of Palin's former Pentecostal church, has also come under fire for his comments. In 2004, he told church members if they voted for John Kerry for president, they wouldn't get into heaven. He told them, "I question your salvation."

Assembly of God issued a statement online in response which said Kalnin was "joking" when he suggested "Kerry supporters would go to hell," and statement went on to say, "We do acknowledge in hindsight that it was careless, and we do apologize for that. This statement is not written as a defense, but as a clarification."

Palin has done little while in office to advance a social conservative agenda. She told the Associated Press in an interview in 2006 that she would not allow her personal beliefs to dictate public policy.

"I've honestly answered the questions on what my personal views are on things like abortion and a lot of controversial issues," Palin told the Associated Press. "I won't hesitate to answer those questions about what my personal views are, but I am not one to be out there preaching and forcing my views on anyone else." But in the last week, her religious background and outlook has certainly spurred debate far beyond Alaska.

*****

"I won't hesitate to answer those questions about what my personal views are ...", Huh? For somebody who 'won't hesitate to answer' she's stalling an awful lot.

Water bears survive in space

The creature seen here is capable of surviving the harsh conditions of space. While it looks like an extraterrestrial, it's actually a tardigrade, a tiny eight-legged invertebrae also known as a water bear. Microbiologists from the Institute of Aerospace Medicine sent tardigrades into orbit last September and exposed them to the cosmic radiation and deep vacuum of space. They returned alive.
From Wired:
Photos Uncategorized 2008 09 08 Tardigrade3The tardigrades had already been coaxed into an anhydrobiotic state, during which their metabolisms slow by a factor of 10,000. This allows them to survive vacuums, starvation, dessication and temperatures above 300 degrees Fahrenheit and below minus 240 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once in orbit, the tardigrade box popped open. Some were exposed to low-level cosmic radiation, and others to both cosmic and unfiltered solar radiation. All were exposed to the frigid vacuum of space...

Just how the invertebrate astronauts protected themselves "remains a mystery," wrote the researchers.

Calling a liar, a liar!

The truth will always come out!

The World of Science

There are many weird things about the giant Humboldt squid, but here’s one of the strangest: Its beak. The squid’s beak is one of the hardest organic substances in existence — such that the sharp point can slice through a fish or whale like a Ginsu knife. Yet the beak is attached to squid flesh that itself is the texture of jello. How precisely does a gelatinous animal safely wield such a razor-sharp weapon? Why doesn’t it just sort of, rip off? It’s as if you tried to carve a roast with a knife that doesn’t have a handle: It would cut into your fingers as much as the roast.

This question has haunted many a marine biologist. So recently a team of materials scientists at the University of California decided to carefully examine the physical properties of the beak. Their discovery? The beak contains a huge gradation of stiffness: The tip of the beak is 100 times more rigid than the base of the beak — so the base can blend easily with the surrounding flesh. Water is the key to the proper functioning of this gradient: If the beak is dried out, the soft base calcifies until it’s nearly as dense and rigid as the peak.

Now the scientists are trying to figure out how to artificially replicate this remarkable gradient, because it’s so radically different from the way we humans traditionally develop materials. We know how to create materials that are really stiff or really soft, but not ones that slide gradually from one to the other extreme.

Anti-Scientology YouTube videos censored by the thousands

Just in case you thought the repugicans and the right wing-nuts were the only lunatics attempting to quash the truth check these Bozos out:

A law firm called "American Rights Counsel LLC" launched a massive attack against Scientology critics on YouTube, sending out over 4,000 takedown notices, including many spurious ones:
Over a period of twelve hours, between this Thursday night and Friday morning, American Rights Counsel LLC sent out over 4000 DMCA takedown notices to YouTube, all making copyright infringement claims against videos with content critical of the Church of Scientology. Clips included footage of Australian and German news reports about Scientology, A Message to Anonymous/Scientology , and footage from a Clearwater City Commission meeting. Many accounts were suspended by YouTube in response to multiple allegations of copyright infringement.

YouTube users responded with DMCA counter-notices. At this time, many of the suspended channels have been reinstated and many of the videos are back up. Whether or not American Rights Counsel, LLC represents the notoriously litigious Church of Scientology is unclear, but this would not be the first time that the Church of Scientology has used the DMCA to silence Scientology critics. The Church of Scientology DMCA complaints shut down the YouTube channel of critic Mark Bunker in June, 2008. Bunker’s account, XenuTV, was also among the channels shut down in this latest flurry of takedown notices.

The Catch

Those of us of a certain age remember "The Catch" that Montana tossed to Clark in the back of the end zone and a San Francisco dynasty was born.

Well, Delhomme tossed the ball to Rosario in an eerily similar fashion in the game with San Diego.

Could it be we will have to put an asterisk by the Montana/Clark hook-up and put Delhomme/Rosario down as 'The Catch' as well.

Time will tell. The Panthers have always played beneath their talent level even when they went to the BIG GAME. This year might just prove to be the year the play at their talent level and if so their are teams in the NFL that will cringe at the prospects of the Cats across the line of scrimmage from them - unlike the critics and fans, the other teams know the Panthers are a damn good team even when they are playing like my grandmother and her blue-haired group could do a better job of it and them playing at their talent level is scary as hell for them.

This is not good news

Brady done for the year

Patriots QB Tom Brady will miss the rest of the season due to a serious knee injury, reports Adam Schefter.

While I am neither a Patriots fans nor a Tom Brady fan I do not wish any player or team this kind of misery.

I hope Tom can recover as quickly as he can.

Lest some think I am 'on the left' instead of center - appearances do not always reflect reality - I found this quote by Oscar Levant to illustrate how I view politics and politicians:

"I once said cynically of a politician, `He`ll double-cross that bridge when he comes to it."

At the moment the Left is sounding the voice of America in its views and opinions and that is where I reside, America not amerikkka so I am supporting the Left.
The right is completely out of touch with reality (evidenced by those on a forum who continually claim I am far left, personally, and by the total disregard for the evidence before them in general in the world at large) so I will not support them.

Amy Goodman: Why We Were Falsely Arrested

By Amy Goodman

“Government crackdowns on journalists are a true threat to democracy. As the Republican National Convention meets in St. Paul, Minn., this week, police are systematically targeting journalists. I was arrested with my two colleagues, “Democracy Now!” producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar, while reporting on the first day of the RNC. I have been wrongly charged with a misdemeanor. My co-workers, who were simply reporting, may be charged with felony riot.

The Democratic and Republican national conventions have become very expensive and protracted acts of political theater, essentially four-day-long advertisements for the major presidential candidates. Outside the fences, they have become major gatherings for grass-roots movements—for people to come, amidst the banners, bunting, flags and confetti, to express the rights enumerated in the Constitution’s First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Behind all the patriotic hyperbole that accompanies the conventions, and the thousands of journalists and media workers who arrive to cover the staged events, there are serious violations of the basic right of freedom of the press. Here on the streets of St. Paul, the press is free to report on the official proceedings of the RNC, but not to report on the police violence and mass arrests directed at those who have come to petition their government, to protest.”

Green polar bears in Japan

Three polar bears at Nagoya zoo in central Japan turned green this summer from swimming in a pond infested with algae. The zoo staff had been changing the water less frequently to save resources, and the hot weather had induced algae overgrowth in the pond and safety moat. The same thing happened at Singapore Zoo four years ago, and at the San Diego Zoo back in 1979.

Gay War Hero Awarded Posthumous Dishonorable Discharge At White House Ceremony

WASHINGTON—In a solemn ceremony held in the White House Rose Garden Monday, recently outed Iraq War casualty Sgt. Maj. Michael Delacroix—a highly decorated career serviceman with an impeccable 22-year record—was posthumously stripped of his military honors and dishonorably discharged from the U.S. Army. "For giving his life in the line of duty and selflessly serving his nation while being gay, Mr. Delacroix will be exhumed from Arlington National Cemetery and relieved of his rank and all attendant benefits," U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said during the ceremony. "We also ask that his mother return the American flag that was given to her at his funeral." A Pentagon spokesman said that Delacroix's cause of death—sniper fire while attempting to save an injured Iraqi boy—will be changed to AIDS in the official record.

Walking on the wild side

Everyone has heard Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side.
But how many of you actually know the words?

Holly came from Miami, Fla
Hitchhiked her way across the USA.
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her leg and then he was she - she said:

Hey Babe, take a walk on the wild side,
Said hey honey, take a walk on the wild side.

Candy came from out on the island,
In the backroom she was everybodys darling,
But she never lost her head
Even when she was given head - she said

Hey Babe, take a walk on the wild side,
Said hey honey, take a walk on the wild side.
And the coloured girls go, doo dodoo

Little Joe never once gave it away,
Ev'rybody had to pay and pay.
A hustle here and a hustle there
New York city is no place where they said:

Hey Babe, take a walk on the wild side,
Said hey Babe, take a walk on the wild side.

Sugar plum fairy came and hit the streets
Looking for soul food and a place to eat
Went to the Apollo, you should have seen him go go go - they said:

Hey Sugar, take a walk on the wild side,
Said hey honey, take a walk on the wild side.

Jackie is just speeding away,
Thought she was James Dean for a day
Then I guess she had to crash, Valium would have helped that bash - she said:

Hey Sugar, take a walk on the wild side,
Said hey honey, take a walk on the wild side.
And the coloured girls go, doo dodoo

This is music folks!

I have seen him fight against raising the federal minimum wage 14 times.

I have seen him fight against making sure that women earn equal pay for equal work.

I have seen him fight against a women's right to choose so consistently that he received a zero percent vote rating from pro-choice organizations.

I have seen him fight against helping families gain access to birth control.

I have seen him fight against social security, even going so far as to call its current funding system "an absolute disgrace."

And I saw him fight against the new gi bill of rights until it became politically untenable for him to do so.

And it got bloody hot today so the Mrs., walked up to me and took the box from my hands and told me to go and rest and not lift a finger the rest of the evening about ten minutes ago.

So, that is what I am doing - you don't argue with the Mrs., when she give orders like that!

Second trial starting for infamous Texas KFC murders

When Darnell Hartsfield saw the inside of a Texas prison cell for the first time in 1984, it was for an aggravated robbery he committed the previous year.
But prosecutors contend the Tyler man was involved in a far more heinous crime just three days before his arrest for that September 1983 robbery.

Hartsfield, 47, goes on trial this week for his part in one of Texas' oldest unresolved mass murder cases - the slayings a quarter-century ago of five people abducted during a robbery at a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in East Texas.

Prospective jurors were to gather Monday at the Brazos County Courthouse in Bryan, where Hartsfield faces trial on five capital murder charges.

Hartsfield's cousin and co-defendant, Romeo Pinkerton, took a plea deal midway through his capital murder trial last year, avoiding a possible death sentence by accepting five life prison terms.

Both Sides Now

Rows and floes of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
Ive looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

Ive looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
Its cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
Ive looked at love that way

But now its just another show
You leave em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

Ive looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
Its loves illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say I love you right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
Ive looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say Ive changed
Well somethings lost, but somethings gained
In living every day

Ive looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
Its life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

Ive looked at life from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
Its life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

Nominee's ally moves to curb probe of Palin

Key Alaska allies of John McCain are trying to derail a politically charged investigation into Gov. Sarah Palin's firing of her public safety commissioner in order to prevent a so-called "October surprise" that would produce embarrassing information about the vice presidential candidate on the eve of the election.
