Real Worst-Case Scenario For Gulf Of Mexico: Double Exploding Methane Trigggered Tsunamis, and more
If one faction of the deepwater drilling debate continues to deny any serious risk of more exploratory drilling - an example of this denial would be the court injunction, just now successfully obtained by oil industry attorneys, overturning the Federal exploratory drilling moratorium in the deepwater Gulf - it is fair and appropriate to state the ultimate potential danger of expanded drilling. And this is one serious worst case. From the Asymmetric Threats Contingency Alliance, viaMi2g.com, a work-in-progress worst-case risk description concludes with this paragraph: "The danger of loss of buoyancy and cascading tsunamis in the Gulf of Mexico -- caused by the release of the massive methane and poisonous gas bubble -- has been a much lower probability in the early period of the crisis, which began on April 20th. However, as time goes by and the risk increases, this low probability high impact scenario ought not to be ignored, given that the safety and security of the personnel involved remains paramount. Could this be how nature eventually seals the hole created by the Gulf of Mexico oil gusher?"
Is BP Burning Endangered Sea Turtles Alive?
A lucky Kemp's Ridley sea turtle that didn't get burned.

Destroying the Evidence?Kemp's Ridley is a critically endangered species of sea turtle that can be found in the Gulf of Mexico. According to Mike Ellis (see the video interview below), BP has been keeping rescue teams from getting to the turtles and has even been burning them alive, along with other animals. Because Kemp's Ridleys are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, killing or harming them can bring civil liability and even criminal charges. Is BP trying to "destroy the evidence" by burning it?

DOJ to file suit against Arizona immigration law next week
At first look, this is great.
But what is worrisome is that the Latinos are being played.
Rather than pass comprehensive immigration reform this year, as promised, the administration is weighing in on a high-profile case that, heinous as it is, only affects one state.
It's an easy to way score points on immigration without doing the heavy lifting of trying to pass real national reform.
Had the administration gotten real reform passed, this suit would be welcomed.
But without national reform, the suit is a sorry substitute.

Dimbulb blasts repugicans for backing off criticism of BP escrow account
The leader of the repugican party has spoken. The round of apologies won't be far behind.
From CNN:
Wingnut hate-radio host Lush Dimbulb is taking aim at repugican leaders for rushing to demand Joe Barton retract his controversial apology to BP CEO Tony Hayward during last week's congressional hearing.
On his radio show Monday, Dimbulb suggested the repugican leadership likely agrees with Barton's sentiments, but are driven by recent national polls which suggest the majority of Americans support President Barack Obama's push for BP to set aside $20 billion for future liability claims.
"It was a shakedown pure and simple," said Dimbulb, echoing the words for which Barton later apologized. "And somebody had the audacity to call it what it was and now everybody's running for the hills."

Goldilocks burglar discovered by New Zealand home-owner
A Goldilocks-style burglar was arrested when her victim came home to find her asleep in bed. Vanessa Joy Long, 39, who has long blonde hair tied back in a pony tail, proved an easy arrest after she broke into a house on Hills Road in Christchurch, about 11.40pm on June 5.
Finding her asleep, the homeowner phoned police, an option the three bears in the Goldilocks fable failed to exercise. She went in through an unlocked back door, raided the fridge, ate the food, drank some alcohol, went to the bedroom, tried on clothes, then climbed into the victim's bed.
She pleaded guilty in Christchurch District Court today, telling the court she had blacked out and no idea what had happened. Judge Stephen Erber bailed her for sentence on September 1.
He ordered a probation report, a report on Long's suitability for home detention, and a reparation report. He needed to know if she could pay, because this fairy tale was not going to have a happy ending. Long soiled the bedding and mattress while she was in bed, and the cost of the food, drink, and damage amounted to $1,500.

Family dies while poisoning rats with car exhaust fumes
Three residents of a small settlement in Ukraine’s Dnepropetrovsk region died from exhaust fumes of their own Zaporozhets vehicle. The head of the family, a 71-year-old man, decided to exterminate rats in the house with the help of his old car.
The man attached a hose to the exhaust pipe of the ZAZ-968 “Zaporozhets” car and put the other end of the hose into the basement of the house. He started the engine and went upstairs.
Some time later, the man decided to see what was happening in the basement. As soon as the man entered the basement, he lost consciousness because of the high concentration of exhaust fumes.
His wife, a 77-year-old woman, started worrying about her husband when he did not come back. She went downstairs to see what was happening in the basement and fainted too. The same happened with their 29-year-old granddaughter. Their other granddaughter found the bodies two hours later and was lucky to stay alive. However, her three relatives died.

Man on way to see dying aunt told he is too fat to fly
A 32 stone man who was on his way to say goodbye to a dying aunt was thrown off a transatlantic flight for being too fat. Sandy Russell was escorted off the Air Transat plane from Gatwick to Toronto by a stewardess last Saturday. He was then offered another flight for the transatlantic journey – but only if he paid for two full-price tickets.
The 32-year-old said he could not afford the £928 charge and his aunt died of bowel cancer in Canada two days after he was due to see her. He said: "I was absolutely devastated. I hardly cry, and there I was reduced to tears out of frustration and humiliation in the middle of the airport."
Mr Russell was escorted off the plane because his 52-inch girth meant that the armrest could not be lowered for take-off, as demanded by the airline's regulations. Mr Russell, from Wolverhampton, said he is angry that the airline did not explain to him before he boarded that his size could be a problem. "The worst thing is, my aunt has died now," he said. "By the time I got home from the airport, she was too ill to talk on the phone, so I couldn't even say goodbye to her.
"I'm not small, I don't deny it. But that doesn't mean I should be treated so disrespectfully." Air Transat agreed to refund Sandy's ticket price "as a gesture of goodwill." A spokesman said: "We can't ask people their measurements before they book a flight – it's a breach of their human rights. In this case, the armrest would not go down and separate Mr Russell from the lady beside him – and he was taking up more than a third of her seat."

Iran cleric says dogs "unclean" and not to be kept as pets
From the "Insane idiot" Department:
A senior Iranian cleric has decreed dogs are "unclean" and should not be kept as pets - a move aimed at discouraging Western-style dog ownership in the Islamic state.
Dogs are considered "unclean" under Islamic tradition but, while relatively rare in Iran, some people do keep them as pets.
By issuing a fatwa - a religious ruling - Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi has sent a clear message that this trend must stop.
"Friendship with dogs is a blind imitation of the West," he said. "There are lots of people in the West who love their dogs more than their wives and children."
Guard dogs and sheep dogs are considered acceptable under Islamic law but Iranians who carry dogs in their cars or take them to public parks can be stopped by police and fined.
The Koran does not explicitly prohibit contact with dogs, Shirazi said, but Islamic tradition showed it to be so. "We have lots of narrations in Islam that say dogs are unclean."

An Indian family with 162 members could be one of the largest living together under one roof.
The head of the family and leader of the 'Chana' sect, 66-year-old Ziona, has 38 wives and 94 children with some of his sons having married and having children of their own living together in a building named 'Chhuan That Run' or the House Of The New Generation. One of Ziona's wives said though their sons lived in different rooms in the building they all share the kitchen where they cook for the entire family.
"We prepare 30-35kg of pork when we want to eat meat and require around 50kg of rice for dinner," she said. The members of the sect, numbering almost 3,000, live in around 350 houses.
The majority of the sect members reside in Baktawng village and have a separate locality called Baktawng Tlangnuam while many also lived in Aizawl and other places.
They all contribute one-tenth of their monthly earnings for the sect which is used for the development of the community which practises a blend of democracy and communism.
Earlier known as Khuangtuaha Pawl, the sect was formed on June 12, 1942 after the followers of Khuangtuaha were evicted from Hmawngkawn village by the village chief for propagating "wrong and dangerous" theology.

Woman accused of fighting boyfriend over last beer
At 8:30 Wednesday night, a 53-year-old man sat in a chair, drinking the last beer in the house. His girlfriend wanted it. Elizabeth Breeden, 41, "went off" on him and tried to grab it out of his hand at their home on McKaig Lane in Land O'Lakes, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. He wouldn't let go. Breeden ripped the Natural Light can in half, spilling the lager on her boyfriend, his chair and the floor, a report states. The boyfriend stood up. Breeden slapped him in the face. Then she kicked him in the groin, authorities said. Breeden told a deputy that her boyfriend kicked her and threw beer on her, which is why she ripped the can in half.
She was arrested and charged with domestic battery. This is her 18th arrest since 1999 — with charges such as possession of cocaine, shoplifting, fraud and failing to appear in court, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The boyfriend told authorities he started dating Breeden in February and she moved in with him in May. He didn't want to press charges, the report states.
Breeden is being held at the Pasco County jail in lieu of $1,000 bail. The report said Breeden was "extremely intoxicated" and there were "numerous Natural Light beer cans in the trash can."

Also: Female dog leads chained friend to freedom
They're calling it "the incredible journey." Dianne Sauve at Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control was all smiles as she led two tail-wagging dogs out of their enclosures. "We're calling them Brains and Brawn, because she, Brains, led Brawn to freedom," said Sauve.
The two dogs are recovering at the shelter on Belvedere Road. Officials there said two men Tuesday saw the emaciated 30 pound male pit bull dragging a 20-pound chain, which was wrapped around his neck, staggering through downtown traffic on Banyan Boulevard. The dog was barely able to lift his head or walk, but the witnesses said the female pit bull was leading the chained male, stopping to urge him along when he stumbled under the weight.
"The female appeared to be leading this poor other dog who apparently is a friend of hers - you can tell they're friends - leading him away from wherever they came from," said Sauve. The two men stopped and picked up the dogs, bringing them to Animal Care and Control. Sauve said they would like to know who chained the dog so cruelly, and how he was able to rip free. But she said, sadly, it is not unusual for some pit bull owners to chain their dogs, thinking it makes them more muscular.
The male dog tested positive for heartworms and is being treated. Sauve said she hopes someone will adopt them, rather than having to have the dogs euthanized. "After Brains saved Brawny, and led him on this incredible journey away from his prison, they deserve a home," said Sauve.

The male dog tested positive for heartworms and is being treated. Sauve said she hopes someone will adopt them, rather than having to have the dogs euthanized. "After Brains saved Brawny, and led him on this incredible journey away from his prison, they deserve a home," said Sauve.

Also: Painter misspells town's name on tower
A painter working on a Wisconsin water tower left behind one big typo. The mistake had Stoughton (STOH'-tuhn) residents scratching their heads. The new paint job had the town's name without the second T. It was spelled "S-T-O-U-G-H-O-N," rather than "S-T-O-U-G-H-T-O-N."
It turns out a painter from Neumann Co. in Romeoville, Ill., had the correct information but simply forgot the second T when painting the 6-foot letters.
And the name was spelled right on one side of the tower. It's just the side facing town that's wrong.
Painter Mike Sandmire says it was the first time he had made such an error. He added that it would be easily fixed with a new coat of paint.

On Saturday, the results of a ten year, large population study of the link between arsenic contamination and diseases or death in Bangladesh were published in The Lancet. The study's authors come to a disturbing conclusion: Article continues: The "Largest Mass Poisoning in History": Arsenic in Bangladesh
