Interestingly enough the theater was built in 1576 by James Burbage as the first public theater in England and had the distinction of being named simply 'The Theater'.
It was built outside London because it was against the law to have live theater performances within the city walls at the time.
Twenty five years after is was built is was taken timber by timber south bank of the Thames river to build 'The Globe' theater.
