It looms atop the summit of Mount Buzludzha, poised 4,727 feet above sea level in Bulgaria's Central Balkan Mountains, and its saucer-shaped structure makes for a seemingly otherworldly presence at odds with the natural remoteness that surrounds it.
It is isolated, gray and weather-worn, crumbling and decaying both inside
and out, yet it has captivated many visitors during the time that it
has dominated this place. Most of these people are here to discover an
intriguing monument to Bulgaria's communist past.
