For the Prop Haters

In yet another answer to the Prop Haters in California:

Talk about strange bedfellows!

Just try and explain this one:

Spurned by the California supreme court, gay couples wanting to marry appealed to the federal courts Wednesday to strike down proposition 8 as unconstitutional state interference in a citizen's fundamental right to lawful wedlock.

The lawsuit brought by two high-powered lawyers and unlikely allies, former Bush administration solicitor general Theodore Olson and his Bush-vs.-Gore opponent David Boies, was met with skepticism about the conservative Olson's motives for getting involved in a civil-rights battle usually spearheaded by liberals...

Daily Horoscope

Today's horoscope says:

If you are in the middle of negotiating any business deals right now, it's not going to be an easy day.
You'll encounter lots of back and forth and lots of small print.
Others may be too demanding in terms of a timeline, so you'll have to push back on deadlines as hard as you can.
The best part of your day will be later in the afternoon, when you see a light at the end of the tunnel and can spend some time with a person who always puts a smile on your face.

Is it afternoon, yet?

Scientists identify new lethal virus in Africa

Scientists have identified a lethal new virus in Africa that causes bleeding like the dreaded Ebola virus. The so-called "Lujo" virus infected five people in Zambia and South Africa last fall. Four of them died, but a fifth survived, perhaps helped by a medicine recommended by the scientists.

It's not clear how the first person became infected, but the bug comes from a family of viruses found in rodents, said Dr. Ian Lipkin, a Columbia University epidemiologist involved in the discovery.

Queen Elizabeth Snubbed: Britain Declares War on France

France and England have fought each other in the 100 Years' War, the Seven Years' War, the Napoleonic Wars and scads of less memorably named conflicts. And more recently, the French and English have treated the blood-and-tears clashes between their national rugby and soccer teams as fetishes for those battles of yore. The geysers of bile pouring forth from the London tabloids this week suggests a new chapter in Anglo-French enmity may be upon us. Call it the "Great D-Day Hissy Fit."

Court Says Suspects Can Be Interrogated Without Lawyer

Whoa! Say What?!

Court Says Suspects Can Be Interrogated Without Lawyer

The high (they must've been high when they mad this 'decision') court, in a 5-4 ruling, overturned the 1986 Michigan v. Jackson ruling, which said police may not initiate questioning of a defendant who has a lawyer or has asked for one unless the attorney is present.

The Michigan ruling applied even to defendants who agree to talk to the authorities without their lawyers.

The court's wing-nuts overturned that opinion Tuesday, with the anal retentive moron Antonin Scalia saying "it was poorly reasoned, has created no significant reliance interests and is ultimately unworkable."

The anally fixated Scalia, who read the this egregious judicial error from the bench, said their decision will have a "minimal" effects on criminal defendants.
"Because of the protections created by this court in Miranda and related cases, there is little if any chance that a defendant will be badgered into waiving his right to have counsel present during interrogation."

Love's lawyer writes: "AmEx knows the claim has no merit. We have told them this for a long time. AmEx's law policies allowed fraudulent transactions to be charged to my client's card."

Larry Fink, Courtney's lawyer, says that 104 AmEx credit cards were taken out under Courtney's name or the name of her business -- and that all the charges attributed to Courtney weren't made by her. He also said it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out nobody takes out 104 credit cards!

This Is Where All The Gov't Leaks Are Coming From

Pissing in an IRS Elevator is a Felony Offense, Apparently

Along with prosecuting terrorists, racketeers, and drug traffickers, the Department of Justice is seeking to combat another kind of pernicious criminality: felony elevator urination.

A Michigan man was actually named yesterday in a U.S. District Court complaint charging him with urinating in the freight elevator of an Internal Revenue Service building in Detroit. According to the document, Michael Hicks relieved himself in the lift "on numerous occasions" in late-2007 (to catch the urinator, a federal agent installed surveillance cameras in two freight elevators).

When confronted by a investigator, Hicks, then an IRS contract employee, "admitted to frequently urinating" in one of the elevators. "He stated he did this because he felt he could get away with it," wrote Special Agent Delmaria Scott in the complaint, a copy of which you'll find below. "Hicks' urination caused the IRS to incur a deep cleaning expense of $4626.25 within and underneath freight elevator #1," reported Scott. Hicks, who was charged with damaging government property, faces a maximum of ten years in prison. Had the urination damage not exceeded $1000, Hicks, upon conviction, would have been looking at no more than a year in the can.

Oh, Joy - More Flooding!

Oh, Joy! More flooding!

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are forming repeatedly this evening in steamy tropical air across the Charlotte metro region, raising the possibility of flooding problems.

More than 2 1/2 inches of rain has fallen at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport in the last 36 hours, and even more rainfall is on the way.

Forecasters say the stream of unstable, tropical air being pushed into the Carolinas from the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico will continue to trigger heavy showers and storms through at least Tuesday night and possibly through Wednesday.

Many areas near Charlotte have received 2 inches or more of rain since Sunday afternoon.

The precipitation is forecast to end late tonight but begin again around midday Tuesday.

Very humid conditions are expected to continue, with nighttime lows only in the upper 60s and daytime highs near 80 degrees. Some fog is possible overnight with the high humidity.

Whether it's the chatty barista at the coffee shop, the talkative stranger sitting on the bus next to you, or the coworker who's always got a story to tell, people you encounter today are up for sharing their lives.
Just be sure that none of the anecdotes take too long.
You have to keep moving and not get in too deep with anyone.
