Nudist swimmers rushed to the rescue after boat ran aground during yacht race

Hundreds of people watched a cheeky rescue unfold in the east of Sydney, Australia, on Saturday afternoon after a small boat got into trouble and started sinking during the Sydney to Hobart yacht race. At about 1.30pm, masses of spectators began to walk from South Head back towards Watsons Bay after watching the fleet of more than 100 yachts depart Sydney Harbor for the annual race. As the crowds passed Lady Bay Beach, which caters to nudists, some began to giggle.
Then, a small boat close to shore got into trouble. Getty photographer Christopher Pearce, who was walking back with the crowd after taking photos of the racing yachts, said nothing seemed amiss at first as the wooden boat came around Sydney Heads and started to pull close to the beach. "The boat came angling into the shore, which was a bit weird. I thought maybe they were dropping someone off," Mr Pearce said. "But then a guy with a kid started screaming at the people on the shore, saying expletives, 'come help, come help'.
"You could see a fair bit of water on the boat." A handful of nudists responded to the man's cry for help, as did other beachgoers who were more appropriately dressed for the beach. The rescuers ran into the water and helped to pluck a woman and a child from the boat, as several men wearing life jackets stayed on board. Others waded into the water, which was around one and a half metres deep, to tie a rope to the front of the boat and begin to pull it onto the sand.
The spectacle, which lasted for around five minutes, was watched by hundreds. "Everyone basically just stopped and watched and looked as this happened," Mr Pearce said. "When they were walking past everyone thought it was funny, because it was a nudist beach, and then this happened." After the woman and child were rescued from the boat, those left on board started to see the funny side of the situation. Workers from the NSW Parks and Wildlife Service were soon informed a boat had come aground and were dispatched to the beach to help.

Compensation order after woman ejected from party during row about size of guest’s manhood

A Scottish party host has been ordered to pay £1,500 compensation to a woman he hurled down a flight of stairs after a heated row about a guest’s manhood. Julie Jamieson was left severely injured after being thrown out of the party when an argument about the size of one of the reveler's package  got out of hand. Jonathan Wales, 28, grabbed Miss Jamieson and struggled with her until she toppled down a full flight of stairs and broke her wrist on landing. Perth Sheriff Court was told that it was bawdy banter between rival groups of women which sparked the confrontation and led to a physical brawl.
Wales was ordered to pay his victim and told to carry out 240 hours unpaid work as part of a community payback order on Tuesday. Sheriff Lindsay Foulis told Wales: “I really question whether there was any need for you to get involved, or certainly not to the extent which you did. But I do accept the injury sustained by the complainer was probably not anticipated and was a consequence of a struggle which took place outside.”
Depute fiscal Gavin Letford told the court Wales ended up grabbing hold of Miss Jamieson and shoving her out of the flat and on to the landing in the close. “As she fell down the stairs she fell on to her wrist and felt it buckle under her body,” he said The court heard Miss Jamieson was taken to hospital and required surgery on her broken wrist. Wales admitted assaulting and severely injuring Julie Jamieson during the fight at the party in Dundee.

Woman paid to leave job after walking in on married male boss kissing man at work's party

A woman in New Zealand has been paid to leave her job after walking in on her married male boss kissing a male employee at a pre-Xmas work party. A source said the woman asked for help from an employment expert because she felt she was being pressured out of her job following the incident about two weeks ago.
Her boss, the business owner, agreed during a disciplinary meeting to a confidential financial settlement, believed to be a few thousand dollars, in return for the woman leaving the job, the source said. "Everyone has agreed to part ways." The source would not identify the business but confirmed the boss' wife worked with him in the business.
The wife insisted on taking part in the exit negotiations, after hearing chatter around the office about the incident, the source said. "Once she heard about it there was no way she was going to let it happen without her ... [but] through the disciplinary process, she did not look happy at all. [Her husband] looked very sheepish the whole time.
"He wasn't very happy either. No one wins in this situation." Despite the cash settlement, it was not a pleasant outcome for the woman, the source said. "She was just annoyed that she was dragged into it. She was annoyed because basically she could see that the writing was on the wall. The trust between her and her employer was gone."

Woman who cruised store on motorized cart consuming sushi, chicken and wine arrested

A Florida woman ate sushi, cinnamon rolls and the majority of a rotisserie chicken, drinking wine while driving a motorized shopping cart at a Walmart, according to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office. She was arrested for shoplifting and other charges.
It happened at the Lecanto Walmart on Tuesday. Citrus deputies responded after the store loss prevention employee contacted them about an alleged shoplifter he had in custody. The employee told deputies that he had noticed the woman acting suspiciously driving the motorized shopping card. He could see a half-empty bottle of wine in her cart.
He also said he watched her grab a box of sushi from the shelf, eat a piece and put the box back. She did the same with cinnamon rolls and mini muffins. He also saw her eat the majority of a rotisserie chicken while on the shopping floor. The woman, Josseleen Elida Lopez, 20, consumed $32.36 worth of food and wine while at the store, including cinnamon rolls, mini muffins, two bottles of S. Home wine and a rotisserie chicken with sauce.
When the deputies arrested her, they found two empty syringes, one in her purse and one in her backpack. She told detectives she had used the syringes to shoot up meth earlier. When they asked her why she took the food she said she was hungry and didn’t want to take it outside of the store. She told them she knew that what she was doing was wrong. She was arrested on shoplifting and drug paraphernalia charges.

Woman who sent black roses and karma note to ex-employer charged with harassment

A woman from York County, Pennsylvania, who allegedly sent black roses and a card reading "karma" to her former boss has been charged with harassment.
Dana L. Grim, 41, of Thomasville, was charged with the summary count earlier this week and has been summoned to appear in court to face it at a later date.
New Holland police say Grim sent the flowers to her former employer in Earl Township, Lancaster County, through a local florist. Authorities say Grim admitted to sending the bouquet and accompanying card in speaking with officers. Police have not identified the recipient.
But the ex-employer reportedly felt so threatened by the flowers, after researching their meaning, that they contacted the authorities. Black roses, which do not exist in nature, have been used to symbolize death or revenge traditionally. The conditions or terms of Grim's departure from the business are also unclear.

Man jailed for throttling his girlfriend after she offered him a McMuffin while he was on a diet

A man who brutally attacked his girlfriend because she offered him a McDonald's McMuffin while he was on a diet has been jailed for more than two years. Lee Barton flew into a rage and throttled Ashley Irvine after she suggested getting him a McMuffin while he was trying to lose weight. The 28-year-old shoved her onto a bed and choked her until she struggled to breathe. Barton, who also threatened to kill his partner, has now been banned from having any contact with her or entering her home street for the next three years.Sheriff Lindsay Foulis said: "The matters to which you pled guilty are serious. I consider custody is the appropriate way of dealing with it. I consider you pose a risk of serious harm to the public." Fiscal depute Gavin Letford told Perth Sheriff Court: "At 8am on Saturday February 21, Ms Irvine asked if he wanted a McDonald's breakfast. In response, he started to argue with her, accusing her of starting on him and winding him up because he was on a diet. The accused stormed off to Asda before returning a short time later. On his return she describes him as being in a foul mood. "She could see the relationship between them was coming to an end.
"She went upstairs to take her wages from a locked box so she would have money for her and her children once the accused left. The accused followed her upstairs and confronted her in the bedroom. She had the money in her hand and he grabbed it from her and threatened to burn it in front of her. He attempted to light it with his lighter. He sparked the lighter but it failed to ignite the bundle of money. He raised his fist as if to punch her and she screamed. "He pinned her down on the bed by the throat. He had his hands round her throat and continued to choke her. He compressed her throat and stated, 'I'm going to kill you'."Mr Letford said she escaped by telling Barton she was texting a friend to meet for coffee but instead she told the friend what happened and got them to call 999.
Barton was arrested and initially denied throttling his lover, but admitted squeezing her face and told officers he "would have killed her". Barton, of Carlisle, Cumbria, admitted attacking Ashley Irvine at Dunnock Park in Perth, Scotland, between September and November last year by compressing her throat. He admitted assaulting her again on February 21 by grabbing her throat, shoving her onto a bed and compressing her throat while making threats of violence. He admitted seizing bank notes from her hand and threatening to burn them. Barton was sentenced to two years and two months in jail, had a further year of supervised release imposed and was made subject to a three-year non-harassment order in a bid to keep him away from his victim.

Man who smashed car through two businesses was trying to travel through time

Three businesses in Pensacola, Florida, are moving to new offices after a car drove through two of them. A Dodge Challenger plowed through Advanced Tax Services, taking out a wall connecting Pensacola Caskets.
Both offices have been closed since the crash. "It looked like a bomb went off," said general manager Emanuel Mores. Mores said office chairs and debris were scattered everywhere. Mores said the tax and casket offices were empty when the car smashed through the building.
Police said the driver told them he was trying to 'travel through time.' "I was mad, then eventually I was happy no one was hurt. You know that was my biggest concern cause, you know, if anyone was hurt, anybody could have died or whatever," Mores said.
Mores added that the tax office will move next door the casket business will move to an address nearby. Both businesses said they hope to be open after Xmas. Pensacola police said the driver has been issued a citation for reckless driving and is in the hospital for evaluation.

400-pound bearded woman arrested after man stabbed

Police have arrested a heavyset woman with facial hair who allegedly stabbed a man in in San Diego, California.
The 39-year-old victim was attacked after asking for a cigarette from someone in a group of people at around 7:40pm on Wednesday, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.
The suspect walked up to the victim and told him to get away from her things just prior to stabbing him in the left side of his neck, Heims said. She ran off before police arrived.
Heims said the victim was taken to a hospital and was treated for non- life-threatening injuries. The suspect had been described as a roughly 400-pound white woman “with a beard,” wearing a white shirt and jeans. She was arrested late on Thursday night.

Weird New Shark Glows in the Dark

Vicky Vásquez and her team at the Pacific Shark Research Center in California have identified and described a newly-discovered shark species that’s as weird as they get. This fish is a black deepwater shark that glows in the dark! The combination of dark skin and photophores that produce a subdued glow give this shark the ability to sneak up  on prey and avoid predators at the same time. Its taxonomic name is Etmopterus benchleyi, named in honor of Peter Benchley, the author of Jaws. For its informal name, Vásquez consulted with several young cousins, the youngest being eight years old.
This super stealth, combined with the animal’s sleek, black appearance led the kids to suggest naming it the “Super Ninja Shark.” Vásquez says she didn’t think her colleagues would quite go for that, so she got them to scale the name back a little.
“We don’t know a lot about lanternsharks. They don’t get much recognition compared to a great white,” says Vásquez, who is a graduate student at the Pacific Shark Research Center (PSRC) in California. “So when it came to this shark I wanted to give it an interesting story.”
The shark is now called the ninja lanternshark, which is about the coolest name ever for a shark. Still, this one poses little threat to humans. It grows to about 18 inches long and stays below 800 meters. You can download the original research paper at the Journal of the Ocean Science Foundation.

7 Hat Legends, Fact Checked

Common knowledge has a lot to say about hats—but is it true?
1. DANIEL BOONE WORE A COONSKIN CAP.
FALSE! While the American frontiersman Daniel Boone became one of the hat’s poster boys, he never wore one. On the contrary, as his son Nathan wrote, he “always despised the raccoon fur caps and did not wear one himself.”
2. YOU LOSE 70 PERCENT OF YOUR BODY HEAT THROUGH YOUR HEAD.
FALSE! You lose just as much heat through your head as you do from other body parts; it just feels colder because the skin on your face and head is more sensitive. (At most, you’ll lose about 10 percent of your body’s heat through your noggin.) This myth started back in the 1950s after a not-so-scientific military study dressed volunteers in survival suits and tossed them into the bitter cold. Since their heads were the only part uncovered, they lost most of their heat there.
3. VIKINGS WORE HORNED HELMETS.
FALSE! Lots of ancient people wore horned helmets! Teutonic knights, Celtic warriors, late Roman armies, the samurai, Indo-Persian warriors, Conan the Barbarian. But Vikings? Not a chance. The trope was popularized in Richard Wagner’s 1876 four-part opera, Der Ring des Nibelungen.
4. HATTERS WENT “MAD” FROM MERCURY POISONING.
UNKNOWN. Although olde tyme hatters used mercury salts to make felt for hats, we’re not positive the practice drove them insane. It’s more likely that the phrase “mad as a hatter” isn’t even about people—it’s about snakes. Back in the 18th century, “mad” was synonymous with “venomous,” and “hatter” was a bastardization of the word “adder,” for viper. In that case, the phrase means “venomous as a viper.”
5. TIN FOIL CAPS CAN STOP BIG BROTHER FROM READING YOUR MIND.
FALSE! Actually, they make it easier. A foil cap is supposed to act as a Faraday cage, a device that—like your kitchen microwave— shields you from electromagnetic radiation. Problem is, the concept works only if the cap wraps around your entire head. In 2005, a team of MIT graduate students found that your typical foil hat amplifies the frequencies used most by the FCC—including space-to-Earth satellites.
6. THE CAP OF INVISIBILITY MAKES YOU INVISIBLE.
TRUE! In Greek mythology, gods and goddesses could wear the Cap of Invisibility to sneak past other supernatural beings unseen. We still haven’t seen one, so it must be true.
7. COWBOYS WORE COWBOY HATS.
FALSE! Invented in 1865, the classic Stetson looked more like a flat, boring version of a sombrero than the stylish, curvy hat we know today. And it wasn’t the most popular hat at the corral to begin with. In the cowboy’s heyday, most wranglers wore top hats, sailor’s caps, and—above all—bowler hats.
