Daily Horoscope

Today's horoscope says:

You cannot always have clarity of thought, so why worry if your mind seems a bit muddled right now?
Any cloudiness you're feeling could be the result of your own self-preservation techniques.
Your mind needs a bit of a vacation, and it's looking for a few moments during the day when it can switch off and veg out.
Make it easier on yourself by finding that time before the afternoon.
Even just turning off the computer or TV and letting your mind wander will help.

Just call me 'Foggy in the Morning' then ...

NC's Korner's Folly house declared haunted

The Kernersville house billed as the Strangest House in the World just got a little stranger.

The News & Record of Greensboro reported Thursday that the Southern Paranormal and Anomaly Research Society declared that the 19th century home known as Korner's (pronounced Kerner's) Folly is haunted.

The group held a news conference Wednesday, saying its investigators made recordings that revealed several disembodied voices and some mysterious specks of light.

Investigator Deonna Kelli Sayed says there are plenty of ways to debunk the evidence if you don't believe in ghosts. But she says there's really no other explanation for the evidence the group found.

The Web site for the house says it has 22 rooms spread over three floors and seven levels, with ceiling heights ranging from 6 feet to 25 feet.

Police charge butcher after NC store shooting

Police have charged a grocery store butcher in North Carolina with murder after a man who dated his ex-girlfriend was shot and killed in the store.

Multiple media outlets reported Thursday the shooting occurred between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. at a Piggly Wiggly supermarket in Laurinburg, about 100 miles south of Raleigh near the South Carolina border.

The suspect's name hasn't been released.

Detective Chris Young says three customers and 10 employees were in the store when the shooting occurred. No one else was hurt.

Young says the victim was shot several times after a confrontation and staggered to the front of the store where he collapsed near a checkout counter.

Iranians say "no" to Nokia over reports of surveillance collaboration

A growing number of Iranian mobile phone consumers are boycotting Nokia after the release of reports that the mobile phone maker participated in "collaborations" with the Iranian government:
Wholesale vendors in the capital report that demand for Nokia handsets has fallen by as much as half in the wake of calls to boycott Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) for selling communications monitoring systems to Iran.

There are signs that the boycott is spreading: consumers are shunning SMS messaging in protest at the perceived complicity with the regime by the state telecoms company, TCI. Iran's state-run broadcaster has been hit by a collapse in advertising as companies fear being blacklisted in a Facebook petition. There is also anecdotal evidence that people are moving money out of state banks and into private banks.

Nokia is the most prominent western company to suffer from its dealings with the Iranian authorities. Its NSN joint venture with Siemens provided Iran with a monitoring system as it expanded a mobile network last year. NSN says the technology is standard issue to dozens of countries, but protesters believe the company could have provided the network without the monitoring function.

Siemens is also accused of providing Iran with an internet filtering system called Webwasher.

And Now They Will Know ... Because of the Internet

Michael Jackson dies and it’s 24/7 news coverage.

A Real American hero dies and not a mention of it in the news.

*****

You’re a 19-year-old kid. You’re critically wounded and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley , 11-14-1965, LZ X-ray, Vietnam . Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8-1 and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the Medi-Vac helicopters to stop coming in.

You’re lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you’re not getting out.. Your family is half way around the world, 12,000 miles away and you’ll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.

Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter and you look up to see an unarmed Huey, but it doesn’t seem real because no Medi-Vac markings are on it.

Ed FreemanEd Freeman is coming for you. He’s not Medi-Vac, so it’s not his job, but he’s flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come.

He’s coming anyway.

And he drops it in and sits there in the machine gun fire as they load 2 or 3 of you on board.

Then he flies you up and out, through the gunfire to the doctors and nurses.

And he kept coming back, 13 more times, and took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out.

Medal of Honor Recipient Ed Freeman died on Wednesday, June 25th, 2009, at the age of 80, in Boise , ID.

Missouri jail to host 'bed and breakfast' event

Want to spend a night in jail? And how about paying for the privilege? The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department in eastern Missouri has come up with a novel way to pay for mattresses at a new jail addition.

Officials are offering the public a chance to stay overnight on July 31 at the recently finished addition. For $50 a person or $90 a couple, people can tour the new facility, learn more about jail, and stay overnight. They'll receive Jefferson County "bed and breakfast" T-shirts, snacks - and souvenir mug shots.

Also included is a "get out of jail free" card. Those who want to leave early have to give another $10. Proceeds benefit the county's jail maintenance fund.

Wells Fargo sues itself

Well you knew it had to happen ...

Wells Fargo is suing itself to clear title on a property in order to foreclose on it; as the first mortgage holder, it must sue all subsequent mortgage holders, including the second mortgage holder...Wells Fargo!
The condo owner's attorney, Dan McKillop, suggested that the reason had to do with paperwork. While a lender could avoid suing itself as a lienholder by just releasing the lien after the foreclosure, that apparently involves an extra step or steps, which end up making it easier and faster for the bank to sue itself. That may be -- I don't pretend to understand this area of law -- but generally it is against the rules to file a complaint that you know cannot succeed (for example, because you can't recover against yourself), even if it may come in handy for some reason. Maybe this is in fact a clever strategy, or maybe, as a professor quoted by FAUX Business suggested, "[t]his is just folks cranking out paperwork without conscious thought."

Scientists search for a 3-foot, spitting earthworm

A massive earthworm is terrifying folks in the Palouse region of the northwestern United States.

OK, well maybe that's a bit of a stretch, but researchers are spending the summer seeking a mysterious, legendary 3-foot spitting worm in the rural areas from Washington to Idaho.

From the Associated Press:
The worm is said to secrete a lily-like smell when handled, spit at predators, and live in burrows 15 feet deep. There have only been four sightings.

But scientists hope to change that this summer with researchers scouring the Palouse regoin in hopes of finally finding the giant earthworm. Conservationists also want the Obama administration to protect it as an endangered species, even though there is scant scientific information about its existence.

"It absolutely exists," insisted Jodi Johnson-Maynard, a University of Idaho professor who is leading the search for the worm.

Kate Beckinsale Wins "Career in Decline" Lawsuit

Kate Beckinsale wanted the truth and now she finally got it, reports eonline.com.

The star of the Memphis-filmed movie "Nothing But the Truth" won about $32,000 in damages and an apology from a U.K. tabloid over what it admitted were false claims that she was fired from a remake of the 1968 Jane Fonda hit "Barbarella."

According to the Guardian, as part of a settlement with Beckinsale in London's High Court, the Daily Express acknowledged that it fabricated the story and caused the 35-year-old actress considerable embarrassment by suggesting she was "facing heartbreak" after losing out on the iconic part to actress Rose McGowan and that her career "was in decline."

In actuality, Beckinsale's camp claimed in court papers that she was never in talks for the "Barbarella" role .

"This article wrongly gave the impression that the claimant's career is in decline, which would undoubtedly have a knock-on effect on those who would be casting film roles, as well as the industry as a whole," her lawyer, Graham Atkins , told the court.

The "Pearl Harbor" star returns to the big screen this fall in the crime thriller "Whiteout," after which she'll team up with Robert De Niro in the comedy drama "Everybody's Fine."
